I'm after as many opinions as possible regarding Southampton's overall reputation as a university and how prestigious it is regarded as being. To cut a long story short I decided to choose southampton as my firm choice over others such as warwick, bristol and bath etc mainly because I liked the department so much (and disliked various things about the others mentioned). But now i'm starting to have second thoughts and considering a year out to apply somewhere more 'prestigious' (predicted 3 As) and consider other universities which I simply didnt have time to visit last year. Obviously I know its important to end up somewhere i'll be happy but I think I also need to seriously consider overall reputation and future job prospects to give myself the best possible chance in life.

So, how do people view Southampton in terms of overall reputation? Which universities is it comparable to? Do people agree with the standings in guides such as the times and guardian?

    Opinions would be most appreciated

Southampton has a well-respected engineering department inside the UK. I don't know about its international prestige, but I was told that MIT has ties with it. I was kind of surprised at the kind of low offers it gives though.

World class university in many areas and very prestigious in all others. Had I thought about my application more before I made it I would certainly have applied there and I'm it is a great place to be a student. If you like the place then don't have any second thoughts as I'm sure that in 10 years time Southampton will be laughing in the face of any doubters.

Doesn't it depend on the subject concerned at degree level?

I've come to the conclusion that the guy's an idiot. Ignore him. He seems to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder when it comes to anyone who isn't a chav/ townie. I'm ashamed that he goes to Newcastle.

I'd say you made a wise decision to pick it as firm choice...I also picked it over what could be considered other world class institutes... did you take the time to look at the departmental ratings for all of the places you applied to? - you can check the ratings on the southampton website.

Southampton gets a large research budget...and does have a good overall reputation and from friends that have graduated from there in both sciences and humanities have got excellent job prospects....
The Sports teams are excellent- part of my deciding factor, plus the people that I've met at offers open days, that I know to have accepted Southampton as firm, are great people and I'm looking forward to spending 6 years with them!

If you decide to drop out I suggest you talk it thru with a careers specialist as when people have dropped out, they don't always win- some places really don't like it and if you go to interview will quiz you on your decision... Anyway what ever you decide to do it has to ultimately be your decision... if you want anymore info on Southampton PM me- I'll be more than happy to help!

Its not full of mummy boys less soo than some unis I know of... and only an hour to central London for shopping

Its ranked as 28th overall (out of 100 in the Times guide) with Reading at 29th and Glasgow at 27th - so yeh its got a good reputation (and also did quite good on the research score which often determines the worldwide reputation). Personaly though I would think that the reputation of a uni only comes as secondary when applying to somewhere - the most important thing is that you like the palce, course and department.
