I was wondering if anyone else has dealt with a predicament I am in. I'm applying online, but one of my referees will only submit his reference on paper. He is an elderly person, and I think he is quite computer illiterate, although he won't admit that to me. I emailed the enquiry system, and they responded with a very dry, I suspect automated, message saying that they require references to be registered online. I already have his letter in a sealed and signed envelope with the necessary form. I can't imagine they wouldn't allow me to send that in. I could be wrong though. Anyone have any experience or advice? Should I call admissions, I'm overseas so this isn't the best option, instead of emailing?

Really? Dang! And I'd put my life on the back burner for the November deadline. I can afford to hop-and-skip around a little and not worry too much for the moment then. :-D

FAQ
The Department will accept applications for the following deadline only:

Application Deadline 2 (deadline 22 January 2010): for all of the graduate programmes of study offered by the Department.

It's a bit of an anti climax! Still waiting for them to confirm it has to be two 2,000 word pieces. Their own website doesn't mention the word count..

Hi Scout and Danielj315

Not to be overly direct but I'm thinking of applying to the same course but not sure if i'd actually be good enough. What unis did you both go to and what degrees did you get?

Thanks

Sorry, didn't see this till now. University of Aberdeen, old but poorly ranked . I'm on course *hopefully* for a first. Lecturers tell me that a 2-4 people from here end up doing Politics or IR at Oxford/Cambridge every year.

That's alright...I figured I wouldn't know for a couple of months at the least. I'm not quite sure how the October deadline works, but I believe my programme only considers applications with the January 6 deadline. But is that typical to have to wait until late March, even if I've submitted my application this early?

well, since they told you they will evaluate it for the January deadline, this means it doesn't really matter when you submitted it.

anyone applying to Christ Church btw?? (only THE most awesome college )

I would call if you can. Best way to get an actual answer to something that specific.

Does anyone know whether oxford gives away places continually rather than deciding once all applications have been received by the deadline. I am applying for the Mphil in International Relations and wondering whether it is worth applying early rather than by the 15th of January? I know that LSE's MSc in International Relations is usually full long before the deadline in January, that is why I am asking.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks in advance.

Somewhere on the graduate applications website is a schedule for decision making. Although individual departments might stray from it, my recollection was that there were certain dates by which decisions would be communicated, depending on which deadline you applied for. Certainly for my course (the BCL), all of the decisions were communicated in the few days before the published decision deadline.

Yay, someone else! Seems as if the Early Modern corps is impressively large this year.

Awesome  What are you espcially interested in?
If i get in im hoping to look at some performance aspects of the mid-period.

NO IDEA where to begin with this statement of purpose still though, how are you getting on with yours?

Which college are you going for btw?

I'm in Shakespeare Studies.

The SoP was really tricky, I thought - I sent my applications off quite early (partly so I wouldn't obsess, partly to get it done before term for my referees' sake), and it was definitely the hardest part. Good luck with yours!

The college thing wasn't an issue for me, because I've just applied to go back to my old college - but I'm applying to Cambridge too (and a load of other places), and picking a Cambridge college was so hard. :s-smilie: Where are you thinking of in Oxford?

Well i'm at cambridge at the moment, so if you want any advice re: colleges i'd be happy to help.

I think im going to apply to magdalene college. But i havn't definatly decided yet. Any thoughts?

early modern is well-represented this year isn't it?! But only for the MSt - haven't seen any other DPhil applicants.

My Oxford app is on hold ... I'm still waiting for my dissertation result, and I know that applying is pointless without a distinction, so it feels a little presumptuous to write the application :frown: So scared for getting my result :frown:

I talked generally about my reasons for wanting to study in Oxford - both my career goals and my academic interests. I then mentioned the specific modules that I thought would help me achieve my goals/further my interests and explained how my previous experience and study would allow me to contribute to class discussions, etc.

Sorry that that's very vague. I'm sure it differs for each course. I was applying for a law course, so the career/academia link was very obvious.

Best of luck!

Thanks, that did help! Every little bit of evidence is a step in the right direction! :-)

Will you even get your results before the deadline? Or are you taking a gap year?

Oh, how horrible for you! Waiting is awful. :hugs: I hope you get good news very soon.

If it's any consolation, I do know of a few people who've been accepted for the DPhil without a distinction - I realise it lowers the odds, but it wouldn't conclusively rule you out.

Oh, I would actually love to know what you think of the Cambridge English Faculty! Is it a friendly place? With the colleges, I'm in kind of a weird position for medical reasons, and thus was quite limited in which I could apply for - but that just made it harder, in a way.

Magdalen is a lovely college, and most people I know who've been there have adored it. And, of course, lots of great music. The English lit. tutors there are brilliant, too.

taking a year out right now, and I'll get my result in a couple of weeks, so I should have a full transcript for the deadline.

thank you  Oh, that's good to know - I had the impression from the website that absolutely no-one gets in without a first and a distinction. But presumably, funding is an issue, and I can't do it without funding..

Well, a lot of the undergrad course here is college based, so I havn't got a sense of it as a community. That said, now that we're in third year everyone is starting to actually GO to lectures, and i've met some lovely people. The graduate course is far more faculty based, and im sure you'll find it very welcoming!

Won't pry into your health issues obvs  but I wouldn't worry about it at all. Whether its physical/psychological im sure your college would be very supportive and provide any pastoral/practical care you need. Personally, I've had mono and hepititus here, and friends have had long term issues such as bipolar etc. All have been fine and were dealt with very accomodatingly

If you get in/decide to accept Cambridge, feel free to PM me with any questions you might have about doctors/help avaliable.
