how long did you have to wait for the college to get back to you?

I got my departmental acceptance on Feb 29th. The college letter was dated March 5th but I got it today (I live in the US, so took a while ).

I write like a girl. Yes, I am in at St. John's (Cam), and they have a fully funded option that I should hear back from in April. I wish I could say the same about Oxford. My first choice was Magdalen and they don't advertise any funding for people with my profile. Thanks for your kindness, Corinna! All the best for you!

yeah, I hope you get it!! St Johns is beautiful
(however, you could also try applying to some other colleges, because there are some scholarships that you don't have to apply to that college for, and if you get it they move you there. I guess you are an international? Solely based on you saying you didn't get the Clarendon, although the clarendon is open to everyone this year. In any case, I don't know specifically about internationals -if you are one - but when I was looking I found 6 colleges that offer 'graduate scholarships' that can go up to full award. Deadlines for most are now, so end of March, early April so if you spend some time today checking every single college website, you might be able to find something  )

Thanks for the tip! I need every possible bit of help. Yes, I'm from the U.S., though I did a 2nd MA in the UK. Most of the U.S. scholarships didn't apply to me. I'm either too old (I'm only 28, but I'm too old, apparently), or they want someone that hasn't completed a degree in the UK.

Nope - I think the board of graduate studies (or whatever their name is) are meeting this week so we should start hearing back maybe late this week, next week ? Regardless, next week is officially late March so it shouldn't be long anyway. Do you know if we will receive news of funding at the same time ?

I have no idea about funding neither...

Let us hope that it will come soon....cause I need it to know very soon....

Did anyone here got a Clarendon Scholarship yet ???

best

That sounds like a difficult choice. I really hope you manage to make it. Would it be possible to do it part-time and work at the same time?

Unless he has right of residence (British wife??) this isn't an option as you can only get a Tier 4 student visa for full-time study.

Hope both of you (shakesper and Corinna) get your funding! ...and everyone else needing some of course...
I am thoroughly confused - I see people posting about not having gotten Clarendon funding, and being told so in their offer letters...my impression was that for Humanities, Medical, Continuing Ed and Soc. Sci., these decisions are still in progress and decided by division rather than by department. (I've been looking here: http://www.clarendon.ox.ac.uk/2012results/)
Should I not be holding out hope for Clarendon funding? I got my offer letter in Mid-January for a DPhil program, but I'm worried that without some sort of scholarship support there's no way I can do it.

You would presumably need the Department's backing to be considered at Divisional level.

I just received my college place in the mail from Exeter this morning! It was my first choice so I am very happy  does anyone have an experience with Exeter House on Iffley Rd. and how it compares to university housing? Thank you!

Congratulations ! I don't know very much about EH though I've visited a few times. New-ish modern buildings. The kitchens I saw were great - large and well equipped. The bedrooms seem quite small though and I thought the location was pretty far away from the centre.

Can you visit and have a look?

Has anyone heard from Queen's yet? Or has anyone on the BCL/MJur heard about colleges?

I know I'll have at least a couple of weeks before I hear anything (only received the offer last week), but my excitement/nervousness/obsession is reaching ridiculous levels. I even tried to teach my dog to alert me to the postman's arrival, but she's not very clever and we didn't get very far.

Very good luck to you Shakesper (I also thought you were a girl - sorry!). It must be nice to be able to have your wife with you while you're doing your postgrad (though I'm sure it adds a whole other level of expense and complexity). I hope you get the funding you need.

Congratulations to the recent offer-holders!

If I remember correctly and if they havent changed the regs recently, Tier 4 visa holder are allowed to work part-time during term time and full time during the holidays. You're allowed to bring dependants and your spouse can work full-time I think (though maybe you should double check this).

I really hope everything works out for you, Shakesper .

now that you mention it, this might be true, cause I was once talking to the wife of a student here, both from the US, and she was telling me she is looking for a part-time job (part-time cause she had 1 baby and a 7 month belly )

Anyway, Shakesper, a piece of advise (advice? always get this confused :frown: )
You should register for couples' accommodation at the university accommodation office. I registered last year near the end of March and we ended up getting a place. And it's quite good too, one nice bedroom, a decent-sized living room, bathroom and kitchen only £760/pcm (including gas and water). This is in Castle Mill, but there are quite a lot of properties for couples and if you end up coming I suggest you register soon

Yes, but I thought Corinna was asking if he could study part-time and work to support that - maybe I misinterpreted her question.

On dependents, you can only bring them if the degree is longer than a year (so OK for PhD but not most taught masters - this did change with Tier 4 vs the old visa regs) and IIRC your spouse cannot work - you have to show you can support all dependents you bring with you.
Edit: I'm not sure about the spouses working aspect. I may be getting confused with the old regs, where you could bring spouses with for a <12 months course but they couldn't work. I had a quick look at the UKBA website but it didn't seem explicit on this, though did say you needed to show you had funds to support dependents.

Oh I see what you mean about part-time study .

You're right the Tories tightened up visa regs on dependants for shorter courses last year, and post-study work too; a few of my mates rushed to catch the the post-study work window which closes next month I think.

I'm not 100% about spouse employment either; I know dependants have to show X amount per month of support without recourse to public funds, but once you do that are you not allowed to work?

Hi everyone! Congratulations to everybody on offers and funding--terrific news.

I was wondering if anyone knew when we might expect a college placement? I chose to do an open application. My offer letter said that the college will contact me directly, but there wasn't any timetable. I really would be happy anywhere, but I must admit that I am curious!

Many thanks!

Some info here on specific properties for couples and families: http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/accommodation/graduate/properties-c/

There's an application form and general info here: http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/accommodation/graduate/howtoapply/

Hope that helps!
I see someone has a postal rejection for a History Phd on Grad Cafe today. Sorry to hear that - hope they get somewhere else that'll do.

Suggests letters may be en route, although nothing in my UK post today. :s-smilie:
