this on itself though makes no sense...if they already know who they are accepting, why not send everything simultaneously?
I actually agree with you on this one, but just for the sake of the discourse:
As I understand it, this practice started to "steal a march" on other schools and snag the best candidates. They send out the acceptances of those they really want, then sort out the rest, sometimes with one or two more acceptances, and a wait list, and the rejections. This is partially a function of the tiny intakes favoured by American schools, and partially because of a trend in the American academy (and I speak purely with a knowledge of History here, I'm assuming for other departments) to pay significant attention to what's "hot."
1 to 4 for available awards to admitted applicants; have I got this right? I'm not very well versed with funding at all. You're reading Classics right - what's the usual ratio for your department?
I have a Masters in a related subject and thought I'd take a shot at both.
Ineligibility: lots of (annoying) reasons including nationality and residence.
Congrats on your success and sorry for the rejection.
I thought my case was the worst that i was only eligible for 2 scholarships out of which one is Clarendon.....Now i should feel lucky.... lolz
Sorry you're probably right - that's the one where they automatically consider everyone applying right? Do they include applications for 2nd Masters too?
Well anyway no luck for me there .
Oh, sorry about that. Well, hopefully, you'll manage the resources. :-)
I really don't know....Job experience does not really play a part in my subject, at all. I think written work/references and personal statement must have made the difference. My grades were OK, but not amazing in comparison to other people coming from my country. I had 9/10 and I know people with 9,7/9,4/9,3 who got in and didn't get funding. To this day, I don't know why I was chosen, especially since my undergraduate degree only included a few modules of the subject I applied for. I would give anything to know why me. It has been quite overwhelming, I am still scared I'll screw up and they'll be like 'damn we should not have given her the scholarship'.
LOL. I suppose it's all sort of like a matter of chance then. They really should write something more about the selection process on their page though.
anyone waiting for History Postgrad decisions heard back yet? The Faculty emailed me last week to say that they'd try and send them out at the end of last week or this monday at the latest...

I don't think its solely chance. But things like proposal/references/written work are things that we cannot quantify like grades, so as applicants we cannot always know if our essays or proposals are good.
Congratulations!!! Great way to start the week Just out of curiosity where are you from?
I'm hoping that they haven't sent out the Victorian ones yet since I haven't heard anything
Thanks! I'm of dual nationality, British and Turkish. Finishing up my final year at York at the moment, where I've Home/EU student status, though I split my time between the UK and Istanbul.

Good luck, hope you get some good news soon!

Whether I actually get funding from anywhere to do Byzantine Studies or not, I have set myself the task of going to Istanbul this summer. Rocking out on the Bosphorus to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vankaSlfSr0

Definitely And yes, the food's amazing, but I may be a little biased in favour of Mediterranean living in general! I really want to make sure I stay connected to the city and culture, even though I guess I'll soon start living in the UK more permanently than I do now.

yeah I want to go too. I have no money atm but it's a place I want to visit. So many Byzantine residues, and the Turkish culture seems close to mine, but also quite different, so I am keen to experience it. I have people from both sides of my family who come from the 'City' as we call it, and I feel a strong pull to it. The food my grandmother cooks for example is definitely affected by her mother's origins and in general Greek and Turkish food share a lot. But I think Turkish food might have retained a more eastern flavour to it, and I want to try it.

I heard back informally a couple of weeks ago now. I was told the same thing as you - that formal letters would be sent out at the end of last week or yesterday at the latest.
One person on GradCafe claims to have received notification in the post today so perhaps we shall hear tomorrow.

did you grow up there? I know how you feel... I miss my country a lot. As for Mediterranean living, well it is the best! Not a matter of bias

Yeah I did are you Greek? I feel like I share a lot with my Greek friends, there really is a cultural connection, particularly as Istanbul is closer to Mediterranean culture than the rest of Turkey.
