yeah I want to go too. I have no money atm but it's a place I want to visit. So many Byzantine residues, and the Turkish culture seems close to mine, but also quite different, so I am keen to experience it. I have people from both sides of my family who come from the 'City' as we call it, and I feel a strong pull to it. The food my grandmother cooks for example is definitely affected by her mother's origins and in general Greek and Turkish food share a lot. But I think Turkish food might have retained a more eastern flavour to it, and I want to try it.

You're making me feel hungry now .

Yeah I did  are you Greek? I feel like I share a lot with my Greek friends, there really is a cultural connection, particularly as Istanbul is closer to Mediterranean culture than the rest of Turkey.

yeah I am  We do share a lot of things really. It's actually a pity that there is this 'prejudice' that Greeks and Turks don't (shouldn't ?) get on because I think that there is just so much in common!

Yesterday me and my bf cooked yoghurtlu and it was so delicious. We have some left overs so I'm looking forward to tonight :P
If you decide to go to Cambridge you should try a kebab place called Bosphorus at Mill Road. The actual kebab was not that good, but their yoghurtlu was really good. I still have not managed to find anything remotely similar to Greek 'souvlaki' but this place was nice (even though it was more Turkish than Greek. I define Turkish as slightly heavier spices etc but I could be wrong )

I love Greek deserts . *salivating disgustingly*. I wonder if Turkish sweets are similar?

I always associate Greek food with feta that I had in Europe. And Turkish food with baklava. Both are bloody hard to find in my city. I won't be able to get it out of my head now and will probably go around the town tomorrow looking for these items. Also, it's 2 am and I've realised that one of the hazards of browsing through TSR is late-night cravings. :unimpressed:

I heard that it might be the case, but I don't know if its a rule or a more general tendency.

Oh, I suppose they want to give a chance to the first-time graduate students before those with already a second degree.

I don't think its solely chance. But things like proposal/references/written work are things that we cannot quantify like grades, so as applicants we cannot always know if our essays or proposals are good.

Perhaps that is why they choose to pay more attention to them than grades. I suppose it's easier to compare a proposal or an essay than to compare an American student's GPA with an Italian's.

Since I've been having nightmares about departmental rejections the last few weeks, tonight I intend to dream about baklava yum !

well I don't know about all sweets, but things like baklava we both have. I want proper good baklava now! All the ones I've tried in England were tasteless :frown:

Haha! Similar nightmares in my case too. Hopefully, tonight they shall be interrupted by giant feta cubes and baklava shooing them away and letting me have one peaceful (albeit hungry) night.

I applied for the 1550-1700 strand. I hope we hear back soon because this is killing me! Fingers crossed  What strand did you apply for? Mail from the UK to the East Coast (esp. New England) can't take that long...!!

Yes, I was just assuming that this was the case in the UK as well. My fault.

I applied for 1800-1914. I haven't heard of anyone hearing for it yet? I was really hoping they'd send International people emails since I'm randomly in Switzerland this week and don't fancy finding out bad news via phone! Ugh. Trying to de IDE of its better to not know and wonder all week or if I should try to enquire, put myself out of this misery and ruin my vacation. I'll probably end up waiting it out but it's killing me.
anyone heard from Politics?

The dept email finally arrived, both good news and bad. DPhil in English: Rejected :frown:. MSt in English: Accepted .

I'm disappointed of course but relieved too.

Glad for you. Sad for you. Hope to see you there!
Anybody applied IR in Jan got a reply?
Original post by hobnob
No offence, but you're not seriously expecting someone who is applying for the same course as you to reveal details about his interview so that you'll be better prepared for yours, are you?:erm:

I agree. Only two types of people would really give you some genuine advice: 1) those who got admitted or will be admitted with certainty and 2) those who got rejected and are nice.

Sorry about the interminable wait - I hope you hear soon and that it's good news .

Best of luck to all still waiting to hear!

Thank you, and thank you! I'm feeling a bit more cheery now ; in a way it'll be good to have another year of taught classes. I'm not sure I'll live through another torturous round of applications next year though.

I really really hope your funding situation works out; btw which college did you apply to? Any hope of funding there?

Hahaha you edited the balaclava for baklava didnt you??

I had a very giggly image of you with scary headgear wrapped around your face, robbing various baklava food stalls at 2am in the morning!!
**Update** 19 March 2012: ALL MPLS CLARENDON SCHOLARSHIPS HAVE NOW BEEN MADE...
ufffff........ lets c whether I am lucky with Felix....
Original post by cyberpoet
I think they do for AHRC; not really sure about the Clarendon though .

AHRC, in their 'Notes for Guidance' for applicants confirm you are ineligible for masters funding if you already hold a higher degree (Master or Doc) in a related subject. Or if you've had an ASRC grant previously at the same degree level. Doc funding would be open if you had a masters only, per the above. Hope this helps?!
