Why didn't you apply to Christ Church then?

Trinity? I prefer Balliol, it's really really pretty. Trinity is also very nice, but Balliol is better imo

How is Univ in your opinion? I applied to Univ, although not sure if was a very wise choice now ...

A friend of mine loves it. I haven't been, but it's in a great area as well.

Glad I didnt get my letter this week :P I have very little hopes of gettting an offer to be honest. If i was you i would ask for another extension explaining all the reasons behind it clearly.

Ya i will do the same but will wait until a closer date to my current extension (June 1). at least don want to make them annoyed at the moment asking for two extensions in 2 weeks time.

I wish your result will be a yes

Might have made a mistake in my form - I ticked to be considered for AHRC, purely because other Universities suggested applying for both AHRC and ESRC (because of the overlap - I am Econ & Soc History).

However I have just discovered in the University's regulations that you can only apply to one or the other, and I think ESRC is probably the 'better' shot.

Too late to phone and ask now. Will try and sort it out on Monday.

Based on the recent discussion regarding AHRC it seems an offer does not guarantee that a particular application will be forwarded to a specific scholarship an applicant applied for (considering he/she is eligible for it). I was wondering whether it is true for all the scholarships??

You have to be nominated by the Department, you are not put forward as a matter of right. An offer of a place does not mean automatic forwarding for scholarships, although you will be considered having been made an offer.

Ok, thanks, makes me feel a little better.
I did not do enough research when I applied, thinking mainly about the application itself, but now that I got an offer it is becoming a real issue

Same! I was so absorbed with perfecting all other aspects of the application that the choice of a college was completely sidelined and I chose in the matter of minutes, mostly just going by how central, old and well-endowed it seems...

Well, chances are we might not even end up in our first choice, so once more this is a 'checking my email obsessively' kind of situation

Very true
Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster. Currently applied for a mphil in Oriental Studies. Just a quick question: I'm an Australian graduate student, and when I attended the Oxford information session at my university, the speaker mentioned previous scholarly publications. I know it has been mentioned previously in this thread but only briefly, but I am wondering - does Oxford actually expect us to have previous publications (obviously, academically refereed journal articles etc.,) to get in? If so, how many here have actually done published anything in a proper, peer-reviewed format? I'd be appreciative of any light that anyone could shed.

Cheers.

Longtime Lurker as well.... I have been waiting not so patiently from Monday for any sort of feedback from the Politics department on my mphil application. told that responses would start being emailed on the 19th... longest week. and no end in site. has anyone hear? any new info? Tks

Well, it is a big difference!

Another interesting observation: Oxford Politics and IR has ratio of offers to actual attendees of 62%, while Cambridge IR (both A and B) are closer to 40-50%, i.e. less than half of people who get offer actually attend.
I guess Oxford offers are more enticing!

I actually planned to apply to Cambridge too but Oxford programme seemed more interesting. Judging by the statistics that you quoted, other people seem to think so too.

Oh sorry I must have confused you with another poster - the old brain hasn't recovered from weeks of severe strain. I hope you hear good news very very soon, and then we can have a fun round of college related panic.

PS Balliol is next door to the college I applied to; we're arch enemies apparently!

Haha! I have read about the Trinity-Balliol enmity too. :colone: I was considering both colleges. Then, there was a recent silly Indian movie which was shot in Trinity and I found the movie so ridiculous that I decided to go in favour of Balliol. Crazy reason but I had to choose one way or the other.

I considered it but then I had to look at the scholarships and financial aid offered by colleges too. Balliol has partnership scholarships with Clarendon. Besides, I was scared that elitist Christ Church would reject me and then I'd end up in some graduate-only college like St. Antony's.

Does anybody know whether college offers normally come by email or by post, or does it vary according to college?
I'm at the end of the earth here, so mail takes FOREVER, and I'm really hoping they'll email. However, it's far too early for me to actually ask the college, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out.

Also, is Queen's as super-popular as the other ancient colleges? To me it looks absolutely perfect (which is why I chose it), but there doesn't seem to be much said about it (here or elsewhere) and not many people seem to have it as their first preference. If anyone has any info about it they'd like to share, I'd be very grateful.
HI IR applicants,
Any news?

partnership scholarship means that some Clarendons are tied to Balliol (and other colleges) which means that if you get the Clarendon you will be moved to Balliol (unless you ticked that box that said you don't want to be moved, in which case you would not get the scholarship). So basically it means that whether you apply to Balliol or not, you would still go there if you got the Clarendon.

Plus Christ Church is not elitist in the way they choose their postgrad students (or their undergrad, it's just that more posh undergrads apply to chch in comparison to other colleges). Plus we have the cheapest food in all colleges. And it's really good too. Just saying.

Darn. In that case, I should have put Christ Church on the form. Oh well, for the moment, I'd be very happy with simply an acceptance letter from the department. I can worry about not choosing the desired college later.

HI IR applicants,
Any news?

I checked Gradcafe and apparently, last year IR people got the news around March 28-29. We may have one more week of desperate waiting ahead of us.

I don't think they *expect* anything, but it is certainly an advantage, not in the least because it shows your commitment and interest.

In my application I mentioned that I gave a paper at a UCLA conference during my exchange, and that it will be published in that conference's journal, which I think certainly helped..
