So my rejection letter for the DPhil crawled in with the snail-mail today; my offer letter for the MSt (dated 16 March in the email) has yet to arrive in hard copy.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, in my case rejections arrive first!!

They did not email me at all! I simply got a letter. Although in the case of Oxford, they forget to email me about lots of things it seems. Not very helpful as I have missed a funding deadline as a result of this failure to communicate.

Yay to the 1660-1830 strand! Do you think you will take up the offer?

Also, anyone know, how much a 9 month MA might just about cost without ANY funding.... including accommodation, utilities and college fees etc etc. Yes I have now given up on funding prospects, I have heard no confirmation from Oxford, and failed to apply for the Ertegun as the university failed to tell me it existed way back in Jan. So, any number crunchers? I need to start thinking about finance (and how to get it!) if I am serious about doing a humanities MA without funding....

Hi - I also applied (Jan deadline) for the MML faculty and no word as yet. I don't think this is anything to worry about - experience suggests that they are just generally quite sluggish. Classics by contrast gave me an offer about a month ago.

yeah I'm sure there's nothing to worry about, I'm just getting impatient :P

I just tried calling the MML office but I'm abroad and forgot about the time difference *FAIL* so I'll try again later and let you know if they give any indication of when letters/emails will go out

Hey have you heard anything about funding from classics?

Yay to the (long) 18th century - the best century of course!!

Yes I've emailed them to accept the offer though it felt odd doing that without a proper letter in hand. I kept checking and re-reading the email just in case I'd made it all up in my head.

I think there's a search function on the admissions website for calculating fees and living costs http://www.ox.ac.uk/feesandfunding/search/ Happy number-crunching and let us know your findings.

Oh the joys of finance ...

I have not accepted yet, I am waiting to see if Cambridge have any other funding available for me - Oxford do have quite a few apart from AHRC and Ertegun.... so its just a matter of waiting now. But waiting SINCE you submitted your application in DECEMBER for these funding announcements is a monumental joke.

People who receive more than one such offer - it does happen!

Thank you. That would be fantastic, but it's best not to keep my hopes up. Luckily I also heard yesterday that I've got a grant from a fund in the Netherlands

Hello all!

Long time lurker but only just joined TSR - this waiting game is becoming a bit too stressful to go through alone ha!

I've applied for Mst Modern Languages and havent heard a thing, getting slightly nervous as people are already hearing funding decisions! AND its end of march *extra panics* ... doesnt look like anyone else is a languages student, is it just me here?

Don't worry, I applied for the same course last year and only got an offer in late March.

Joys indeed. I did a quick search and the MSt English for Home/EU is £6,360 + £12,900 = £19,260. Quite a bit more for overseas students of course. But the living cost component £12,900 is for 12 months and I wonder if you can trim that down for 9 months?

What are Cambridge fees like in comparison?

AHRC confirmation emails for English are on their way... just got mine, so unbelievably excited!

Today I received an e-mail that I've been put on the reserve list for the AHRC. But who would turn such an offer down...?

People who take up offers at another university.

Is anyone still waiting to hear back from politics MPhil?

So it turns out that having lost my voice and not being able to go to work has led to me realising all the things I really don't know about my course in Oxford next year. Any current student/future student who has paid more attention than me able to help me out?

* Are the prices quoted for living costs by the university accurate? (£4,425 for accommodation, £5,250 for all other living costs over 9 months)
* I've seen things saying that undergrads can request financial help from the university, is this also true for postgrads?
* What's the story with postgrads and terms? Are the terms longer than at undergrad? are essays and things due during term-time or would you be working during the holidays?

Thanks for any help!

I havent heard anything. On GradCafe supposedly a couple people got rejection two days ago, then one person received notification of a scholarship yesterday. It seems like an abnormally long wait.

Hello friends!

So...the Ertegun emails have started going out. Rejection for me, but it came as no surprise! I wish you all the best of luck

PS: First-ever TSR post is about Ertegun scholarships. That in itself makes me feel a teeny tiny bit prestigious!
Unsuccessful for ertegun  So surprised hahaha
I figure it is like 1000+ applications for 12 places...

Thanks a million! Yeah, it's history I'll be doing so if anyone has any clue on that it'd be great. I'll probably leave it for a bit until I contact anyone as I'm guessing right now they're up to their eyes in funding and current students.

Another Ertegun reject here, and just as I learn to spell the name and all! Situation only made slightly better by the fact that a load of primary school children were doing a hilarious procession outside my window at the time I got the e-mail.

Most colleges only charge rent during term time - i.e. 24 weeks. Since I'll be living at home for the rest of the year I will have no rent liability for the remainder of the year. 24 weeks of rent at college rates (depending on college) is closer to £2,500-3,000.

They may try and insist I produce a guarantee for the full £5,900 anyway. However I have prepared for this and there are ways and means of coercing compliance if given no choice.

To second what Athena said, even undergraduates at Oxford generally have to be around in 0th week and potentially 9th week as well - so you'd probably be looking at more like 30 weeks a year. The terms are so intense that it is really important to have one week at both the start and end to either prepare / consolidate your work. Most grads I know live in Oxford all year round. If your subject has a dissertation element then unless your home is near a very good research library (e.g. London - which, if so, good for you! ) then you'll probably need to spend a large chunk of the vacation preceding the dissertation due date in Oxford. I spent most of the Long Vac in Oxford last year just doing research for my undergraduate dissertation. :s-smilie:

I don't mean to sound harsh - just thought this might be useful info for you to plan with!
Another rejection for Ertegun. So shocked!
