The Careers Service at Oxford released their Destination of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey. I think this was released sometime last years but I came across it only now. Some very interesting information on what people do (and how much they earn, and can they repay their loans ). You can access it at http://www.careers.ox.ac.uk/academics/tracking-students-careers-activity/

things are indeed looking very bleak for English students according to them  even so, makes me glad that I left a business degree to do something not associated with the devil

are you gonna ask for every college?

If this guy's real-life etiquette and manners are anything like his online ones, he's going to have a tough time at Oxford, I'll say that much! ;-) If he's actually going, that is...

Hello,

I've been offered a place to study at Oxford next year, and I'll probably be staying at a college since it's supposed to be less expensive.

My main concern is: are visitors allowed to stay with you? I'm from Spain and my boyfriend would come to visit me quite frequently, and obviously I'd expect him to stay with me. Would that be a problem? Is there a strict policy on visitors?

Also, I'll be studying in the faculty of Modern Languages, could anyone tell me what accommodation is close to that?

Thank you!!!!!

As far as I'm aware this should be no problem. I was an Undergraduate at Keble and my boyfriend stayed quite frequently. I'm sure there are rules about it, but the impression I get is that Colleges are quite lax! You might want to check with your particular college though...

Thank you very much for answering so fast  It may seem silly but that was one of my main concerns in choosing accommmodation, it'll be hard enough to live so far away!!!

From my experience of accommodation at Oxford and elswhere... usually, theoretically the answer is 'That is a problem' but practically the answer is 'That is not a problem' -- it's obviously very difficult to enforce rules against extra people staying in these rooms.

The real decider of whether or not it's a problem is usually your relationship with the cleaners, as most of the time they're the only college employees who are likely to know. All the cleaners I've met have been very friendly and haven't cared when housemates have had people staying with them; I suspect it would only become an issue for the cleaners if it result in extra work for them.

I assume you are a grad as this is a grad thread?

Essentially, the answer is that it is not a problem. Most colleges will say that there is a limit to the number of nights that you can have someone to stay, but in practice this is not usually enforced, especially for grads. In addition, many grads live off-site, so there is no one checking who is going in and out (whereas in college porters may see). Sometimes scouts (cleaners) will know, but it depends how often they come, and they are unlikely to report you, unless your boyfriend is actually living there.

In terms of accommodation, it will depend on which college you end up in.

Is that a bad thing? I feel like we must all be at least a little bit insane for wanting to go to grad school...
Let's keep the tone of this lovely thread friendly!

I've got to be the most mental person on here, as much as I keep checking my email... Still no news from the college... Congrats to everyone with offers!

ah cool, I just asked cause in my country, along with all humanities degrees, they are considered less employable.
What modern languages are you studying?
Reply 3256
yeah I mean all humanities are pretty much seen as "less useful" than sciences in Britain but as far as humanities go, languages are quite well looked upon.

I'm studying French
Contacted Magdalen. In mid-April they had passed my application back to the Faculty to send somewhere else. :frown: sad. The graduate secretary kindly informed me that I wouldn't hear of rejections--only offers.
Looks like most people here are waiting for college info...anyone still waiting for admissions results from the March deadline? My department estimated 6-8 weeks and it's week 8 now! I also have to make a decision about a job and really wanted to wait until I heard from Oxford! I'm itching to e-mail them, but I doubt they could give me anymore news!

In general I'd say leave them to it as hassling them with e-mails doesn't help them do their job. Given your circumstances though I'd say it's definitely worth giving them a call.
