Contacted Magdalen. In mid-April they had passed my application back to the Faculty to send somewhere else. :frown: sad. The graduate secretary kindly informed me that I wouldn't hear of rejections--only offers.

Don't be too down-hearted! Magdalen looks beautiful, but I've heard that it's MCR isn't the most active / social in Oxford, so it may be a blessing in disguise.

I just think it's funny

I thought so too!

Kind of brightened up my day actually, with another no news from college day (I kind of just want to know so I can get on with applying to college accommodation, too late for uni, and to know if that won't happen I ought to start looking at other options asap ... which I probably should but urgh, why can't I be bothered to deal with finals and accommodation for a degree that I still may not, as its conditional, actually get to do!)

Ok rant over... must get back to 'words, words and words'

Good luck to all those still waiting to hear on offers!
A friend of mine recently heard from English, so maybe this means they are looking at the apps again?

Thanks for the encouragement. Beauty is one of my top priorities, though. I'll be fine, but I just hope I don't get stuck in a new or out-of-centre college.

I do understand how you feel. I was very keen to come to an old college for undergraduate, and remember feeling a bit irritated when a friend slightly scoffed at me for this. It was alright for her; she'd had gorgeous buildings all the way through her school-life, whereas I was sick of breeze blocks! But even the colleges you wouldn't necessarily think of as beautiful or very old (e.g. St Hilda's) have some very lovely aspects, and even the lovely old colleges generally have their 1960's mistake - so, swings and roundabouts!

According to that survey, ZERO PEOPLE THAT DID MY COURSE GOT JOBS, FML

they say languages are the most useful degrees, hahahahah

actually on second reading, that is because 72% have continued studying :/ only 2 people are unemployed.. I guess I feel better....

78% of people doing film aesthetics have jobs... oops maybe chose the wrong course! ha was considering that one

Well, look at the number of people who responded from your department. I'm just convincing myself that because the sample size from my department is small, maybe they don't reflect reality!

Thanks, HoVis! You are kind. I appreciate the advice. My wife and I are coming to visit in two weeks, so I can make the tough choice between Cambridge and Oxford. I already have a college offer from Cam (St. Johns). Wish I had one from Oxford so I could compare. We'll just keep our eyes open.

I will be coming there with my partner and living in college accommodation which will come to around 800 pounds a month at Wolfson. We are assuming that the monthly living expenses for a couple would come to about 1500 pounds including rent. Is this a reasonable budget? We like to meet friends for coffee/drinks, and go out drinking/dining a couple of times a month, and catch the occasional show/movie too - is this doable within this budget or should we be preparing for a much more austere lifestyle?

Also, my partner has just quit his job and is trying to make an entry into professional photography, possibly focusing on portrait photography and events. What are the opportunities for this in Oxford?

I would say that's eminently do-able as a budget. That leaves £700 a month for non-rent expenses. My fiancé and I between us usually spend around £500-£600 a month on food / coffee / books, etc (gosh, it seems a lot when you add it all up!!), and water / internet / heating / electricity bills add up to a little over £100. You might want to keep an eye on your expenses, and maybe forgo drinks one week if you're overspent, but we have a pretty sociable lifestyle on what we spend.

As for professional photography, I'd say both yes and no -- there are lots of events (college balls etc) where a professional photographer could find employment but on the other hand colleges never seem to have a problem getting a hold of such photographers, and from my researches there are a *lot* of wedding photographers in Oxford. But there certainly are a lot of events, which is a start!

Amazing! Congratulations on the college offer - John's is lovely and does seriously good food! (It's Balliol's sister college so I've visited it a couple of times). Have you been offered couples' accommodation at Cambridge?

Thank you for the detailed response! I was terribly worried that £1500 may not be enough so your post is a huge relief. Of course, we would still need to learn to keep an eye on our expenses and cut down on unnecessary spending. We can afford another £500 a month, but that's our travel fund, and we don't want to dip into it except in emergencies.

Hmm...I guess there's no way of knowing about the photography opportunities until he actually gets to Oxford and figures it out. Keeping our fingers crossed on that one!

So sorry to hear that - I hope you'll hear from another cool college soon.

Judging from the long wait and evasive replies, I'm pretty sure I've been rejected from my first choice (Trinity) too. Just wish they'd be able to tell me though.
can we contact colleges directly and just ask?
^^ I suppose so but mine wasnt able to tell me anything for some reason.
Just got my college offer! Queen's

Requesting a reassessment of my fee status though, as I feared I might end up needing to...

don't see why you couldn't... I did and they emailed me back fairly quickly with the response, so I guess it just depends on the particular college's admissions secretary!
Hi every1, I have been short-listed for the felix scholarship. Kindly let me know, how many students will be interviewed for those 6 scholarships? Will they test my academic ability? or the interview is 2 check my financial need?
Wish Ox allowed for you to state a second college choice like Cam does. Didn't get in at Magdalen, so now I'm being considered by Linacre. :frown: Really sad. There are so many lovely old colleges in between the two on the spectrum. Wish we all could have more input into college placement. I'm so excited about my supervisor at Oxford, but hope the college selection doesn't make the choice between Universities even more difficult. Offer at St. Johns, Cam, so I've definitely got a strong pull there. Maybe Linacre doesn't have room for me--here's to hoping.
Glad I didn't give in to the urge to contact my department - they e-mailed today to inform me of acceptance with formal letter to follow! Now to hope that part doesn't take quite as long! I'm excited to join in with the college talk, but my program is distance learning, so I think it's probably less important. Still excited to find out my placement!
