Uploading my application now - scary stuff. Just to check do I need to submit something to say why I don't need an English language test? And I can skip the GRE stuff right?

Has anyone received any offers yet?
Hi all

I just started my application today for a DPhil in AOPP. I am trying to choose a college but am not sure how important it is since I do not want to live in halls anyway? Have any other postgrads commuted in and does the choice of college matter that much under these circumstances?

Thanks (in anticipation of your help!)

If you still want to be a part of college life, then it might be worth looking at the size of the MCR. A large MCR is probably more likely to have more social events going on for you to get involved in. You could maybe even target those colleges that tend not to accommodate all of their grads, since you wouldn't be the only graduate living out. I think the University's profiles of the colleges have statistics about the number of graduates in college accommodation.

I'm not living in college accommodation, but most of my friends are. I sometimes feel a little excluded from college life, because I'm not there for the "let's have a bottle of wine in so-and-so's room" type gatherings, but I try to go in to college for organised social events and for formal dinners, so I am still somewhat involved.

Good luck with your application and with your college choice!

I've met a reasonable number of postgrads who commute, though I live in college accommodation myself (I'm just a masters student). I think most colleges can't accommodate everyone for the full three/four years of the DPhil anyway.

I'd suggest you look at what kind of funds colleges have available to give out to postgrads for travelling to conferences & so on, which can vary from college to college (basically on how rich they are I suppose).

But yeah, if you're not going to be housed by your college I shouldn't think the choice is all that significant. I was thinking the other day that while my college makes my life more comfortable in various small ways, I'd be perfectly able to do my course even if I wasn't affiliated to any college at all...
Thanks guys.. I have been looking at funding opportunities as a possible clincher but didn't really consider the size of the MCR - you have been really helpful in giving me some food for thought

How did your interview go?!

Good thanks. Find out when they write to me with their decision in a few weeks. Quietly confident. Have you had yours yet?

My interview is in 4 hours... Hope I get to be "quietly confident" at the end of it all too!

Hi everybody

Will be applying for the BCL for 2012 (if I ever complete my application - one of my referees has uploaded his reference already - bless him!). Just saying hi - and good luck to all.

Re choosing a college, one of my referees went to Balliol, and he highly recommends it - but I'm thinking it might be so popular that my chances of being pooled would be very high. My current favourite is Queen's - any thoughts?

I was on a study trip to Oxford a month or so ago, and got a tour around Queen's. It's absolutely beautiful and peaceful place, I'd highly recommend it. That said, I applied to Magdalen myself

This was my first choice. The space is the most relaxing and beautiful in the city. But it's way too far from my dept. So I chose Balliol. We'll see how that goes.

Queen's is gorgeous. Just walking past it is enough to make me happy. From what I can tell, your chances of being pooled are pretty high if you choose any of the ancient colleges, so you may as well put your genuine first choice down.

I've heard that it's really difficult to get into Magdalen if you haven't done your undergrad there :frown:

Hehe that's OK, I'm more concerned with getting an offer in the first place . If I make that, I'm happy no matter what college I end up in

Weird... Do you mean, that if you apply with an Oxford undergrad degree but from a different college, that you're not likely to get into Magdalen, or that anyone at all not from Magdalen (and by extension Oxford itself) isn't likely to get in? I wonder if that makes for an Oxford-dominated, not-particularly-diverse graduate population.

Leaning towards Balliol.

I mean if you are not already from Magdalen. But it might be just a rumour. I have a friend who applied there, she is really good and her application was definitely strong as she was reserved for the AHRC, but Magdalen didnt get her. In addition, a guy I know from M. told me they tend to favour their own.

Hello, =)

I have my interview next week to study for the MSc in Computer Science.

If was wondering if anyone had any advice about the interview. I am currently doing my undergraduate Computer Science degree, and am curious if they are going to focus mainly on maths since I already have a background in the CS side of things. I just want to have a good idea of specific areas of maths they may test me on.

At the moment I have absolutely no idea about what the interview entails!

Thanks!
