Having just been to my BA convocation this week, I must say that I look forward to wearing a gown at formal. I am so happy that my college is doing formal dinners every night! It's completely shallow and very silly, but I always loved traditions like this... Also, I just learned that there is a Pie Minister in the covered market; I can't wait to go every week (and get poor and fat... but who cares!) Oh and I guess having access to one of the best stocked libraries in the world is something that I definitely look forward to.
(Hurray for something more positive on this thread! Thanks Student01!)
Ha actually the Pie place here isn't so good I find. Oh were you the girl I was speaking to before about Egyptology/Near East? If so the relevant grad seminars here for that are absolutely awesome. :|

That's a shame! I really love the Heidi Pie, and the fact that they have veggie gravy. (But I guess the UK in general is just much better at being vegetarian friendly than Canada, it's definitely not just Pie Minister!)
I did apply for Egyptology and for Classical archaeology, and will do the latter next year. Is it at all possible to sneak in other people's grad seminars? Because if I could attend some Egyptology seminars during my free time it would for sure make the top of "why I'm excited to go to Oxford" list! (Which is already shamefully long haha!)

Well yes you can go to different faculties seminars, although in the case of Archaeology here its a bit weird...they don't mix much and...well you'll see when you get here. Essentially you probably won't need to the mad mixing Classicists do.
The Class. Arch. seminars can be amazing though, earlier this year we had the Oliver Dickinson talk, Colin Renfrew has came at least once too, amongst others. Topics from the bronze to Hellenistic periods. Really well provisioned.

Well that's half worrying and half reassuring! Would you care to elaborate on the first part of your post? If it's at all like anything I've experienced it's rather the classicists that keep to themselves, saying that archaeology is nothing but an easy soft sub-discipline! (I actually did my undergrad in classics, but I am going over to the dark side for PG! )

I know what you mean about the traditions, its partly why I wanted to go Oxford in the first place, I think its nice, creates a sense of community, although yes shallow in some ways! I am a little worried, as I am not entirely used to these traditions, formal dinners etc, but I hope it won't be too difficult to participate, I don't buy into the 'Oxford stereotype' but it will be a change to my current university.
So, what are you all looking most forward to about student life at Oxford?
I'm looking forward to leaving Australia for the first time since 2004 (I know!!), to start studying things I'm interested in again (I'm currently working 3 jobs, including teaching at my uni in a subject that bores me to tears - but it's all only temporary to fill the 9 month gap between finishing uni and coming to Oxford), and studying in the beautiful old libraries.
I'm also looking forward to meeting a bunch of interesting new people, which is why I like the college system (as far as I can tell), because it gives you a chance to meet people from other disciplines, whereas if I was an international student at another uni, I'd probably just end up hanging out with the other law students because I'd get limited chance to get to know anyone else (not that there's anything wrong with that, but variety is the spice of life).
My letter said the term begins on 1st October but the dates of full term says 7th October.
ETA : Okay I found out the first week is induction week. I'm also looking forward to not having silly questions.
Bear in mind that applies for all terms - '0th week', the effective start of term, is not counted on the official terms dates, so if you need to organise any holidays during your time ahead, make sure you take the official date then work back a week to get the actual date at which it is sensible to be in Oxford from.

The orientation week begins on 1st October and you would be strongly advised to arrive by then at the earliest.
