update : so i got an offer that i accepted for college owned accommodation at 11 iffley road , in a big shared house with 8 others . atleast half of these are undergrads at hilda's and the remaining may be students from any college and any courses ( such as myself - postgrad at hildas) . is this a bad idea ? i still have time to change my mind if anyone has horror stories of sharing houses with such arrangements?

This is not a horror story -- I don't have any of those to share, and I haven't lived in this place myself -- but I know 11 Iffley Road is at the noisy end of Iffley Road -- close to the roundabout, the Cape of Good Hope (a pub) and a couple of other fairly noisy buildings. That doesn't mean it's a bad place to be living, or anything -- I can't really say one way or another, and in any case I don't know what factors you'll be weighing into your decision. I thought it might be worth mentioning, though.

oh ? does the fact that its close to a pub make it particularly unsafe or something ? I'm sorry , i havent lived in the UK at all so i have no idea about these things

Oh no, I shouldn't think so. Most pubs are safe and the Cape isn't a particularly rough pub. In any case that part of Iffley Road is well-lit and has people and traffic passing through it until quite late, it's always looked very safe to me. I go out for a late night at least once most weeks and walk back through it at one or two in the morning and I never feel like it's dangerous.

All I'm talking about is what I said: it'll be noisier than living in an out-of-the-way side-street would be. But, as I also said, whether or not that's at all important depends on what you're looking for in accommodation.

right...but thats really the only place im being able to get at the moment. are you sure its not too awful? the only reason im looking at a place that close to hilda's is because my department is on banbury so i thought some of the other houses further away in cowley would make it quite far to reach

Look. I've told you all I know. If I knew it was awful I would have said so. If I knew it wasn't awful, I would also have said so. I don't know, because I don't live there; and even if I did live there, it would partly depend on the housemates, and they will change anyway at the beginning of the academic year.

Signing any accommodation contract is a gamble, and I've offered the one piece of information I know in the hope that it will give you better odds. I'm not willing to take responsibility for your decision. I don't know what the right choice for you is because I don't know the accommodation. I appreciate that you're in the stressful position of having to decide on housing in advance and I wish I could offer more advice, but I can't.

I think a friend of mine used to live in that building, actually. It isn't brilliant, but it isn't awful either, and from what I've heard about private accommodation in Oxford, you could probably do a lot worse than that... I'd take it if I were you.

By the way, Banbury Road isn't really as distant as you seem to think. If you're a fast walker, you can actually cover the distance between Hilda's and Hugh's in a little over 30 minutes on foot. If you don't want to walk, there are several bus stops along Banbury Road, with buses leaving every few minutes, so you only really have to go to the centre of town and then take a bus. Or failing that, just get a bike and you'll cut the journey down to about 10 minutes.

would you care to explain to me why you negged me for saying that another student should not be worried about being a few years older?

This post was not relevant to the discussion. Please PM me regarding any quibbles you may have.

Great, thank you very much! I've accepted college accommodation.

As for it being "boring" - this is my least concern, to be honest. I am looking for knowledge, not for entertainment. And it is probably not true, anyway.

Well the professor who said as much was speaking about the intellectual climate. But we all have our own opinions :P

Except that you are just parroting the opinions of a professor you heard! Oh, the multiple ironies

Pardon? I have no first hand experience of University College Oxford, and so must rely on the views of others. If we cease to use others' opinions to make decisions then TSR may as well shut down

Nonetheless, I applaud the pun.
hi guys,

does anybody know if oxford accepts a line of credit as proof of available funding? i got a place at st cross and i m trying to sort out the funding. my aunt's line of credit plus a career development loan are my only options...

also does anyone have a template letter of what should be included in the letter from a sponsor or a letter from a bank manager confirming available funds? i d really appreciate if someone could send one to me to [email removed] since my aunt will be acting as my sponsor but since she s in canada i d like to get all the paperwork right the first time because otherwise sending everything a couple of times is going to take ages....

I don't know anything about whether Oxford will accept a line of credit, but I'll send you a message with the letter I sent from my bank manager. These aren't based on anything we got from Oxford, we just made them up and hoped for the best. My college accepted them without question, so they should be ok as a template (but if it's really going to be an issue, it might be an idea to check with your college).

Good luck
A fairly worrying indictment of my summer how excited I was to receive an e-mail from the English department telling me that my reading list will be sent in early August. I can't wait to start, just need to rack up a couple more months of minimum wage pay..
