Yeah, I've been rather confounded by how slow and feckless some of the admin people at Oxford have been.

I have a theory that the distributed, collegiate way things are put together just compounds the inefficiency which most uni admin systems seem to have. There are more administrative groups which you have to make talk to each other.

There's probably much truth in that. I gather that each college took around 4 weeks to reject me, then had to send the application back to the department, who sent it on to a new college. A modified version of the "clearing house" system from the very start would probably be more effective!

Oh, which muppet is down-voting my posts now? Some petty grudge, most probably. Well whoever you are, you ought to know that you're a cowardly snake and don't belong on these forums, or anywhere else for that matter.

I am from Switzerland. However, our water is great! I was asking this because e.g. you can drink the water in Berlin (Germany) too but it just sucks in comparison (sorry mates) because it tastes chlorinated you know! So I was wondering how it's like In Oxford ...

Best

Ah, I know how you feel about the taste of water. That said, I suspect my preferences are a bit different from yours; I love Oxford water, but mainly because it tastes pretty similar to East Anglian, water, which is very 'hard'. If you don't like the taste then I'd probably recommend a Brita filter over just buying it all the time! Plus, using a Brita filter will stop your kettle getting all bunged up with limescale.

Ah this accommodation business is a nightmare. I really want to live cheapish in Cowley/St Clements and looking likely ill end up living with brooks people. Im def not being a snob or anything I just would really prefer to live with people at oxford to make social things a bit easier and wanted a solid relationship with people at a different college so I could experience dinners and get them to loan me books my library might not have. Guess ill just have to rely on sports and stuff.

This surprises me slightly. Why are you having to live with Brookes people? I know a lot of Oxford University people who live out around the Cowley Road area, at least in the areas closer to the centre. Keep searching for Oxford people who have a spare room, as they do exist!

hey guys,

I got the following info from my college with regards to a bedlinen pack which I could buy. I am moving in with my fiancé thus I am also wondering whether I´ll need two of those or just an extra pillow. However I am not from the UK and was wondering whether that´s the standard size for sheets etc because I want to buy at least another pillow and linen sheet...

Hollowfibre Duvet 10.5 Tog Poly/Cotton Cover Flame Resistant Filling to BS7175 Source 2 - Size - Single 54 x 78"
Polyester Pillow Flame Resistant Filling to BS7175 Source 2
Duvet Cover 5* Super Contract quality Poly/ Cotton Printed with Envelope end - Size Single 54 x 78"
Pillow Case 5* Super Contract quality Poly/ Cotton Printed / - Size 19 x 29"
Fitted Sheet 5* Super Contract quality Poly/ Cotton Size Single 3' x 6'3"

The description is like reading chinese for me so I would really appreciate any advise and help with the details. Is the described product of good quality? In Germany it seems like we´re having a different size standard etc... HELP  Are you guys taking your own bedlinen with you?

Cheers

Are you buying this from your college? How much would they charge for it?

Firstly, are you and your fiancé moving into a room with a single bed? If not, then you want to ask for a double duvet and sheet etc.

As for the thickness of the duvet, the temperature is so changeable here that I'd personally recommend getting a 'four-season' duvet set - these come with, for example, one 4.5tog duvet and one 9tog duvet that can be buttoned together. 4.5tog is good for the summer, 9tog for autumn, and then both together for winter (and it can get quite chilly in winter, especially in old college accommodation!). Boswells, the department store on Broad Street, sell these.

I'd probably recommend just waiting till you arrive and buying all the bedding from Boswells - they do student discount at the start of Michaelmas, and it will probably be better quality than college would give you, I suspect!

Hey,

thanks for your kind answer and clarification. Yes I would buy this from my college (Linacre)... They charge 25 pounds for it. I will have to ask whether they have double duvet and sheets as well!? How much does Boswells take for such a 4 seasons duvet set? Is it easy to buy duvet covers for those sets.. I mean is it standard UK size?

Again, thanks for your kind help. I appreciate that a lot!!!

Latis, I thik the question was whether you are moving into a college room with just a single bed. Because that will be tough for the two of you.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that couples are not allowed into college rooms. The only option for a couple is a college owned flat.

Dont know, it just seems all the listings on gumtree and stuff are Brookes students PG or UG going through clearance which makes sense I guess since most Oxford students would be put up in college or college housing and most foreign PG students have guaranteed housing.

Has anyone e-mailed the English faculty to ask about the reading lists?

Hy, my college is a graduates only college and offers partner accommodation in some of their houses for a higher prize, because they say the rooms are bigger. We have such a double room. I just checked the website of the shop and their 4 seasons linen set costs 250 pounds... That´s a lot!!!! Is it really worth it?

Are there any other English 650-1550 students on here?

Wow, yes that's a lot. Far, far too much! Just go to M&S when you get here - a couple of sets of sheets, a duvet itself and pillows may set you back £100.

Thanks for the tip... It seems to me that, compared to the 25 pounds my college charges for its bedlinen set, all other sets are quite expensive. However, since HoVis said the college´s set will be too cold in winter and that a 4 seasons set is better, I think I will have to go with linen from a shop. Thus, your tip is very useful to me... THANKS A LOT

Nonetheless I should mention that the 4 seasons set at Boswells has 2 sheets (one for summer and one for autumn and tucked together they´re for winter, as far as I understood...)

Not necessarily. Some colleges have either double rooms or studios that they offer to couples.

Can anybody tell me if the OSS number is the same as my student ID number. If not, where do I find my student ID number? It seems like I´ll need to fill it in on my contract.

Any advise is much appreciated.

Many thanks
