Wow seems to me that in contrast to the Cambridge thread most future Oxford students are not around the forum anymore.... Too bad what have been quite a lot of fun to talk to you guys and how you´re doing with your reallocation etc...

Basically, how much luggage or stuff do you plan to take with you!??? Hmm, what are you guys taking with you and what are you planning to buy upon arrival?

Best wishes,

toni

I've got two full-sized checked bags plus my carry-on, includes a towel and winter gear. I might buy more linens once I see what's provided. It's everything I could think of except my ski boots.

I second the earlier motion to have a pub night, does anyone know what the orientation schedule entails?

Hey Josh,

sounds like a good plan with regards to the luggage.... Are you planning to bring some electronic stuff too (hairdryer, kettle etc.) or are you buying this stuff on site?

I totally agree that a pub night would be great fun..especially to meet all the TSR guys  I think there is no such night at the orientation programme.. Which college are you at?

The Fresher's Guide suggested against hairdryers and kettles (they consume a lot of power) in favour of picking them up in town. I'm packing just the laptop, shaver, and ipod; planning to pick up a local phone upon arrival.

Reading through the programme guide now, how's the evening of the 27th, following the international students' social hour (ending at 17.00)? Any locals or continuing students who'd like to recommend a place?

The 27th would work for me! It'd be very nice to meet all of you!

One of the questions on this page addresses that ("Can my partner/spouse attend the orientation programme?"):
http://www.ox.ac.uk/students/new/orientation/

It says that partners cannot join the main orientation event due to space, but there is a partner-specific event a day later on September 28th. You can sign up for that by emailing [email protected]. My boyfriend and I will definitely be attending that one together.

As far as pubs, I really recommend the Bear (adorable, but maybe too tiny!) or Chequers

Do you mean the society fair, where you sign up to mailing lists etc? I think not. Usually, each person receives one ticket giving them a date and rough time to go in, and no one else can go in. However, if your partner wants to sign up for society mailing lists, she will be able to do so, although there can be complications if non-students want to join societies.

Hi guys - I'd be up for a pub night (though the facebook group for my course was also talking about doing something on the 27th).

Re packing - I'm not taking appliances (other than laptop and its paraphernalia), I'm not taking sheets, towels, pillows or anything (I'll buy them there), and I STILL can't fit everything in my suitcase. I don't know what I'm going to do. :frown:

As I'm going to have to buy a whole heap of stuff in Oxford, I was wondering whether anyone had an opinion on whether the estimated living costs were about right, or whether I should try and arrange a bit more money. I've paid for my accommodation already for the year (which includes bills and internet), and so I'd have about £8000 remaining (based on the amount I have to guarantee - ie Oxford's estimate of living costs), to last me until the end of July.
I've budgeted separately for set-up costs (e.g. sheets etc, general home stuff, cleaning supplies, stationery, limited text books), but NOT for winter clothing, which I don't yet have because apparently our winter isn't real winter - so the £8k would be for day to day food, clothes (because I won't be able to take heaps of mine), stuff to do, whatever.

Do you think that will be enough? I'm borrowing some of this, so I could try to borrow more. Or will that be ample, and I should maybe borrow less? (I'm obviously not expecting professional financial advice, but if anyone has a rough idea, it would be very handy).

Apologies for my incessant questions - I'm in full freak out mode here

Yeah I meant Freshers week and the whole society stuff.... Would have been great fun to go there with her because she has nothing else to do and it would have been a great starting point for her to make some first social contacts as well....

I did not know that there is limited time for entry though... sounds a bit strange imo...

Thanks Fayre...

I knew that it´s not aloud at the orientation programme but I was mainly talking about the Fresher´s Week ...

Nonetheless, we will also join the partner event... Is there anything special you have to write to them or is it enough to say... Hy my name is... me and my partner want to attend/register....

Cheers

Yeah my suitcase also has limited space... I guess we all have the same problem...

With regards to the money I would say it depends on how long you have to stay in Oxford. I mean, 9 or 12 month but I guess you´ll stay 9 right?
To be honest I really can´t tell whether that amount will be enough but basically I think it´s always good to have something on the site ...
On the other hand that would be approximately 888 pounds per month (for a total period of 9 month) which is imo quite a lot and should be sufficient...

May I ask where are you from? You said your winter isn´t really a winter and thus I am curious...

She is from Australia, she even has a flag in her profile
I think £8K is more than enough. Oxford estimates that that's what we need including rent/bills but if you've already paid that then you have plenty to live of.

OMG I am blind  Sry
In terms of stuff I've got about that much too... two bags, bedding/sheets and a small box of books. No kitchen stuff, I'm thinking I'll just get a few basics there as I'm in self-catered accomm. Luckily most of these things were stored in London at my friend's house over the summer so I hope we can drive up with all of them in one go.

Although three years ago, when moving to uni for undergrad, I also came from outside the UK and I find being brutal with the necessities is usually best - ease of transport did often trump the costs of buying anew in my experience! The overweight charges at the airport can be a bad shock.

When is Freshers Fair? Any other Home/UK students arriving on the weekend of the 29th-30th?

One more question guys.... what have you filled in on the student sign in form with regards to your term time adress??? The adress of your actual college/private accommodation or the college´s adress????

Best wishes,
