Hey,

I was gonna submit my application tonight but I just can't choose a college! I know it doesn't make too much difference academically, but I'm torn between Balliol, University, Merton and Magdalene! I admire the english fellows in all four.

Does anyone have any suggestions? In particular, do any of these have nice graduate accomodation? I know it sounds silly, but a nice room helps me to concentrate!

I've seen nice and less nice accommodation in all of those colleges, it varies even within the colleges!

Hey there!

I recently received an offer to study for the MSc in Mathematics and the Foundations of Computer Science at Oxford.

Does anybody else have an offer yet?

I applied for the November 18 deadline and my offer letter was dated on the 30th November. Will my college place/funding just be decided with the January 20 intake?

Thanks!

Adrian.

I am applying to Migration Studies Mst and I live in Armenia. I am only 21, but I have tons of sociological research experience. I have received US government scholarship to study in US for a year, I have done some graduate work there, also subject in migration studies. I have community work experience in NGO, foundations, work with orphanages, children with special needs. Besides English, I know Spanish, Russian and Armenian. My referees are US professors very eager to write a good reference letter. I am submitting 2 written work samples from my graduate classes related to migration. During my high school years I received the prestigious educational award of the President of Armenia. Still, do you think I have any chance of getting accepted?
I will be submitting my application tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Hi all,

I was just wondering, has anyone who applied to Oxford for *any* MA program heard back from them yet? I applied way back in November, and I'm hoping to get a response (positive or not) soon.

Thanks.
Hey, I applied in early December - not a peep yet, and I don't really expect one very soon to be honest. There's a chart somewhere on the grad admissions pages that shows that if you applied for the Jan deadlines you will prob not hear back till March. It's sooner for those who went for the Nov deadline though, so if that's you then you may be hearing back soon.

Any opinions on newly introduced Oxford MSt courses? There is one I am thinking of applying to, but I wonder if it's bad to be the very first cohort at a programme? Do you think it may be less organized? More difficult/ easier to get into? Any thoughts would help:P

Which course are you applying for? I'm currently on the History of Art MSt course, which has only been around for about 8 years I think. In my experience the organisation of the compulsory theory modules has been pretty good, while my option subject (medieval art) extremely unorganised. However this has actually been great. Since our class is only four people, we got to choose which areas we wanted to pursue and practically wrote our own syllabus! Of course, the supervisor guided everything, and we have lots of field trips, so there's a sense of order emerging out of chaos! I don't think new courses are necessarily easier; in fact, numbers tend to be more limited...

Yes. I actually applied quite early in October. It has been a three-month wait!

Does anybody know when the Graduate Admissions Statistics available for 2011?

It says that Statistics for entry in 2010/11 will be available in late 2011 but now it is 2012.

I have no idea but you can try to extrapolate from the past years. I noticed that in the sciences at least the number of applicants as well as the number of offers increased over the years, but strangely the numbers of places taken has remained fairly stable. It looks like they have to give out more offers to form equally sized incoming classes possibly due to funding issues.

I did my undergraduate degrees at the University of Melbourne, Australia (a long way from Oxford). For my college preference, I have requested Merton.

I know an Australian in the course, I think she studied in the national university of Australia or something like that.
Good luck with getting Merton! What is your area of interest?

My area of interest is oratory, specifically, Ciceronian oratory and rhetoric. I am particularly interested in the role and importance of the didactic (i.e. Cicero as rhetor) in his forensic oratory.

oh...you are coming in a bad time, cause I think that our main Cicero professor will be in a research leave (Reinhardt).

A pity. I met Professor Reinhardt when I visited Oxford last July. He seemed very nice and an excellent resource. Nevertheless, Oxford being the powerhouse that it is (at Melbourne, we have only four full-time classical language academics), I am sure there will be several other potential supervisors. I have been particularly impressed with Dr van der Blom's research (Wolfson College).

yes Reinhardt is amazing!!! But as you said there will be other people. And in any case, him being on a research leave next year means that if you want to stay for a DPhil, he will be back in time for that
