Has anybody heard anything from the history faculty yet please? p.s. don't ring up to try to find out when you might hear... they do not like that one bit!

Transnational/British Empire history here - haven't heard anything yet either. Were any of you historians interviewed?

No interview for me... I guess we shall all be hearing pretty soon.

Indeed. Best of luck.

I have to say it's a little reassuring that none of the history people I've encountered - no interviews I can deal with, but if others had been interviewed and I hadn't, I couldn't help but take it as a bad sign.

Incidentally, how is Oxford ranked vs Cambridge in postgraduate history? Do you know?
Do you mind me asking (all the Oxford successful gradutes), what your average GCSE grades were to get into Oxford?

I finally caved and just phoned the History department. Apparently my application has been recommended for review with the next intake of applications - which means I won't hear one way or the other till March. Its far better than a rejection - but still, its frustrating to have to wait even longer now :/

Sorry to hear about the extra wait... but congrats on still being alive so to speak... one question, how on earth did you get them to read you the decision over the phone?

I think Cambridge is ranked slightly higher technically speaking, but I think for graduate study it really comes down to quite nuanced things, such as where particular academics you want to work with are, etc.

From my perspective though the fact that Oxford offer 2-year MPhil programs, and Cambridge don't is quite a big plus for Oxford... that said to attend either would a great, life altering experience.

I should try not to feel anxious, have you had offers from elsewhere yet?

Yes, I've been offered a place at Cambridge for the MPhil in Modern European History. What about you?

Hopefully when Oxford says they'll notify November deadline applicants from "late January onwards", they mean late January...:s-smilie:

Anyone heard about the MSt Modern & Medieval Languages?

I emailed the department today asking when we can expect to hear back from them. I got a pretty prompt reply stating that there had been some delays and that we can expect to hear the outcomes of our applications on Wednesday. Hope that helps!

May I ask, out of curiosity, where you did your undergrad degree and how you did?

Congrats on the offer!

Actually that is the BIG point against Oxford for me: I can scrape together 1 year between my parents and my savings, but I can NOT afford 2 years (unless I get a very good scholarship).

I felt a bit better about it all when I remembered that when I went down for the humanities open day in November, I found out that 1) the vast majority of applications come in for the Jan deadline and 2) they only offer around 5-10 places for the Modern Euro history Mphil each year. So the flat I haven't been rejected means that they feel I'm good enough, but they need to check against the majority of applicants for that program before making a decision.

Or something like that.

As to how I got them to read out my decision - I just called the department up (You can find the contact number here http://www.history.ox.ac.uk/prosgrad/pg_history_contacts.html - its the first one listed). The lady that answered told me that they would be sending everything out soon, but she could just read out my decision to me. I think my heart stopped the entire time she was umming and ahing over where I was in the database - followed by a massive anti-climax. Still, its a lot lot better than a no.

Just have to wait for Cambridge now.... Still a week till the next degree committee meeting though. Hurry up and wait etc.
Hey all!

I've applied for the MS in Computer Science course just yesterday.

Anyone here got an offer earlier? If so, what are your credentials?

I know I am graduating from the best university in Lebanon and the Middle East with a BS in Computer Science and a GPA of 3.6/4: 86/100 in major courses - 84/100 in maths courses, with minors in mathematics and computational science.

I have good recommendations, one of which is from a DPhil graduate in Computing at oxford.

Do you think I stand a chance?

Best of luck to all!
Hi folks. Applying for the Contempoary India MSc, no funding.

However, although I will try and get my application in for the January 20th deadline, this may not be possible as I am still awaiting 2 referees to submit, and my current workload is obstructing me from submitting the best Personal Statement and essays I can, so I may just leave it until March.

My question: I dont know the system well, would this jepodise my chances much if I applied in March? It's a small course, with 38 applicants last year.

Many Thanks

I am applying to Blavatnik School, the new school for MPP course. I was wondering if anyone (outside UK) is having trouble with paying application fees through credit card payment gateway?

Hello,
I am also applying this year (currently editing again and again the documents for submission). What is the issue? did you find a solution?
Hello everyone,
I am applying to Oxford's Master of Public Policy.
I would like to ask your opinion about my application:

***BA Social Sciences from top french "Grande Ecole" with a major in Euro-Asian studies. equivalent of 1st class honours
***GRE scores:
Quantitative 159/82% (750 on old GRE)
Verbal 163/94% (650 on old GRE)
AW 5,5/96%
***8 month volunteering experience in education/development NGO
***year long internship in a top think-tank specialized in international relations
***Grew up in Senegal, studied in France and China
***Bilingual in French, English, Wolof, intermediate level in Spanish and Chinese

My questions are the following:
----while my grades in my Bachelor are equivalent to a 1st class honours when converted, I failed two minor subjects during my last term in university. All my other grades are A and A- except these two. Do you think it is worth applying, or will they not even consider my application?
---do you think my profile is anywhere near to getting an offer with scholarship from Oxford?
---would my chances to earn a scholarship increase with more work experience?

Thanks!

An offer, perhaps, and it only costs £50 to apply so you should do it anyways, but I would forget about funding. Funding is extremely competitive and most deadlines are probably over by now. Work experience is generally not considered when applying to 'academic' master's. Also, UK universities do not use the GRE generally.

i think the deadline situation is actually OK - this Friday, January 20, is the main funding deadline. This post is maybe a little harsh, obviously it is very competitive but policywonk's profile looks good, with awesome language skills and relevant work experience  good luck!
