Actually I think your advice would have been reasonable for a 'normal' masters....but this is a specific type that is quite different to most of them in terms of what they look for in applicants, funding options etc.

They are only taking in 30 people this year and plan to build it up to 120 at some stage. So applications may be more competitive in the early years, though not sure how well known the existence of the course is yet either.

Thanks for this fruitful discussion! These answers are very helpful

You got offered a place? Congrats!
In that case I'll up the C.V. as is. Hopefully my background as a builder and call centre worker will give me a veneer of proletarian authenticity

Yea I did, I got in for the MSc and the MPhil! Thank you!
I put a little bit at the beginning about how I'm a good worker (standard cv stuff) then a section on grades (A levels) then office qualifications (proficient in microsoft office, typing speed) then after that it was nanny time.

Hello!!

I got an offer for MPhil in General Linguistics and Comparative Philology !

*happy*

Hi! That's nice, we'll be on the same course then
(although I want to do something with General Linguistics, not with Comparative Philology; but still)
Hi folks. Applying for the Contempoary India MSc, no funding.

However, although I will try and get my application in for the January 20th deadline, this may not be possible as I am still awaiting 2 referees to submit, and my current workload is obstructing me from submitting the best Personal Statement and essays I can, so I may just leave it until March.

My question: I dont know the system well, would this jepodise my chances much if I applied in March? It's a small course, with 38 applicants last year.

Many Thanks

Thanks yes!! A very nerve raking phone call. She said that they should all go out this week, except a few 'complicated' cases... although on the phone they are not able to tell you the details of the offer... I strongly recommend ringing, although I should imagine they will be swamped with calls from historians reading this thread now word has got out they can tell oyu over the phone!

I have to thank you - I called based on your experience, and my application has been held back/postponed to be considered again in the light of the January intake. I wouldn't have heard anything until mid-March, and would have gone even more mad - so thank you!

No problem, and well done on being put over for January, although I am sure you will have no finger nails left by March!

What was your proposed research area by the way?

Thanks! I would, obviously, have preferred an acceptance, but this is much better than a rejection.

I'm interested in the evolution of British occupational policy within their empire in the 19th century - I find it a great blend of social, cultural, military, and transnational history.

Do you know/have heard anything about an application's chances if it's put over? I'm not familiar really with this policy so I'm not sure how hopeful to get.

Hello again,

I have to ask again (I haven't done anything than refreshing my email account for the last 48 h) if someone has heard from the chemistry departement (Theor. Chem. MSc). I really can't take this anymore....

I just submitted my applications for the DPhil & MSt in English (and almost had a coronary when the server was too busy to upload my docs!!).

Are there any DPhil English applications out there??

I put all my mimimum wage jobs in it :colondollar:. I'm pretty sure the fact that I was a nanny is what got me in

Hey! It must be because that's what I put on my CV too!

And I put "relevant work experience" and "relevant modules" where I just listed some modules from my undergrad that tie into the degree I applied for.

I have no idea, although I should imagine that chances are fairly good and they just want to be doubly sure of you... but don't quote me on it lol! your research sounds really interesting... it was the two-year mPhil, not the one year Mst. you applied for right? I applied for the two year and my research is around the Spanish Civil War,

And you're sure that you'd be equally happy to do either?:erm: I think being forced to do another masters degree instead of moving on to the DPhil would have bothered me quite a bit.

Yeah it's a bummer :frown: but my own fault really for not getting a distinction in the other MSt.

The dept advised me to also look at places like King's and Exeter who arent so fussed about distinctions, but I had such a seriously good time at Oxford last year, I wanted to give it another shot.

Having said that, I suspect they too think Im a little crazy

so you already have an MSt from Oxford, and you are basically reapplying for it? I didn't even know you could do that.
