Just checking in to see if anyone has heard anything via e-mail from the history department yet (specifically, Modern Brit and Euro MPhil). I would call, but even if I'm accepted, I wouldn't want to get excited without seeing the academic condition.
Hi everyone,

Right now I'm finishing up my application for the Msc Russian and East European Studies degree at Oxford. I want to make it for the January 20 deadline, but as usual I'm way behind schedule. So my first question is: Do you know when the online application will close? At midnight tomorrow, or before?

I would hope I have reasonable odds at getting in. I have three very strong references, and good academic credentials. I graduated with distinction from an MA at University of Bath, and my dissertation was rated to 85 %. I hope that counts for something, although I don't really know how good it is by Oxford standards. I'm not sure if it is considered odd to do two masters, but I think I can make a persuasive case for my motivation to do so. Anyways, my main problem is these two mandatory essays. I wonder if it's ok to submit one that isn't on a topic relevant to the degree, but nevertheless pretty darn good? Hehe:smile:
I think that it is midnight. I had to send some extra materials in, and the departmental secretary advised that I send them in before tomorrow midnight

Re: your essay issue, the degree I am applying for is in a different field to my undergrad, so one of my essays was definitely not "relevant". I think it says somewhere in the application guide (or some other document) that this is fine... and I'm sure that many others face the same problem anyway, so off-topic essays are probably expected.

I applied for the MSt in Modern British and European History and haven't been notified. I assume that the offer letters for both MSt and MPhil for the department will go out simultaneously. I think someone on this board earlier on said that we should be notified this week, but it seems quite bureaucratic.

Thanks, I'm rooting for midnight then.

Just put together a 2000 word abstract of my dissertation. At least it mentions Russia - twice!
I have another issue with my application. I'm sorry to bother you with these mundane problems, but hopefully someone can help. Where I'm supposed to add college preference, when I press search, I just get a pop up with "no result found". And there's no option to put anything into the text bar...

If this is somehow a hidden IQ test for the application, I failed with flying colors.

Hi,
I have also applied for Russian and East European Studies, only MPhil

- deadline is 23.59 GMT on Jan 20. But your references must be also submitted by then, not just the application, everything.
- essays do not have to be on the subject, although it is good if they are. (Mine are on the subject.)

As far as I remember there is a pop up coming up with bunch of choices. I chose University College. Not all the colleges are available.

Oh my! I hope that he has allowed for this (and I am glad that you pointed it out!) It would be a shame to miss out... hopefully if he does miss out, there is another deadline...

I think you need to fill in the preceding field first ie your choice of programme, and the college search should come up with colleges that cover that programme?

Cool, good luck!

Thanks a lot for all your help guys, I appreciate it.

My last reference was submitted yesterday, so that part should be fine:smile:

When I press search, the pop up comes up - but not with the different choices...and I have selected my program in the bar above. Maybe I should call them and ask. As it happens I have no idea which college to select, so my plan was just to go with no preference.

Edit: Yeah, I just cleared and re-entered my program. This enabled me to select that I have no college preference.

I'm getting there!

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I'm unable to find it - what should we enter at the Proposed Funding Arrangements section? It says "Do not include in this section any University of Oxford scholarships, AHRC studentships, or Departmental studentships."

I am applying for the Uni. of Oxford scholarships and a departmental scholarship, but I guess I shouldn't mention it here? I don't have any other funding arrangements.

If I choose Unknown, then I'm required to enter something in the 'University Tuition Fees: Primary Status', 'College University Tuition Fees: Primary Status' fields etc. (choosing from Applied to/Intend to Apply to). I have no idea what to put there. :frown:

I have finally received a reply. To be honest I was too scared to open the email when I did finally get it so sat and stared at it for around half an hour!

I haven't been offered a place but I haven't been rejected outright. I have been informed that my application has been held back and will be re-assessed with the next round of applications (i.e. the 20th January deadline). I'm taking this as a sign that there was something that they liked about my application but that they aren't sure whether or not to take me.

Does anyone on here know the statistics of how many people get in after their applications are held back for the next admissions round? How likely am I to be offered a place?

I just hope that I don't go insane waiting another two months!

I finally caved and called, and the secretary said they've mailed out loads of letters this week -- she doesn't think we'll receive anything by e-mail, but the material should hopefully be on its way.

Thank you!!!!! Weird, so we'll hear by actual mail?

Regarding college choices, - there is a suggestion on the program website:

All Russian and East European Studies students and faculty members at Oxford have attachments to colleges. St. Antony’s College has a Russian and Eurasian Studies Centre with a long history and a Russian Library. It provides a home for many of the M.Sc./M.Phil. in Russian and East European Studies students.

However, most colleges will provide interesting and supportive environments for Russian and East European Studies students. Other colleges with significant clusters of academics and students in REES are Christ Church, New, University , Nuffield and Wolfson.

You can find it here:
http://www.rees.ox.ac.uk/prospective_students
Oh thanks a lot. I'll select St. Anthony's, then! Looks like I really haven't done my homework this time, but hopefully I'll still be able to put together a decent application. My only experience with UK universities is from Bath, and we didn't have colleges there (at least not that I was aware of!)

Yeah, that's the impression I got. I'm in the US, and she said I should most likely have it by the end of next week, at the latest. Fingers crossed...
