Hi all,

I've just had some very upsetting news regarding my application for an MSt in General Linguistics & Comparative Phililogy at Oxford, and I'm not quite sure what to make of it.

I have submitted my online application through embark two days before the deadline and then received an email from the embark system that said my transcripts were missing and that I should submit them through the inquiries form on the uni's website (and nothing further). So I uploaded them there again with a note that I these were apparently missing though I could see them in my submitted form.

However, 15 minutes ago (i.e. seven days after the deadline has passed), I received the following reply to my inquiry: "We regret that this document does not meet the requirements stipulated in the Application Guide for an official transcript, i.e. visibly and indelibly certified by the issuing institution, and was therefore insufficient to complete your application for the deadline. "

Now the transcript I submitted was an intermediate transcript, and as such comes from our department and not on the university paper (though it still states all the marks and department, student numbers etc.). I asked at registry here before specifically if there are intermediate transcripts available from the registry, but the official transcripts are only issued after the degree is awarded. So, as I am still a student that would be the most official document I would get at any time.

Obviously I feel very upset about this now, and I wonder whether anybody can offer any advice. Is there any way to get them to reconsider the application? And if so, would that affect the funding as well (as there are obviously funding deadlines too)? And if that is not the case, have I wasted £50 to be told a week late that my application was not complete in the first place? I am not even sure whom I should speak to there...

Talk to your faculty secretary first thing on Monday and try to get him/her to phone the graduate admissions office on your behalf, to explain the situation. They obviously can't ask you for a form of transcript that doesn't actually exist.

This isn't a disaster. The applications process works to standard forms and protocols, and may not be able to cope with your situation. The real people who handle admissions, however, are usually both helpful and flexible - and certainly won't demand that you produce a document which isn't obtainable.

You need to get in touch with the admissions contact for the course you have applied for and explain the situation. They can advise on the best way forward.
Does anyone know anything about the 4-year Wellcome Trust Neuroscience course at Oxford? I've read all of the information provided on the website, and it sounds absolutely amazing but also highly competitive...I mean, they only offer five studentships per year and I can't imagine how many people apply, but I'm sure it's more than that, haha. And yet it doesn't say a 1st class is required, just an 'upper second class degree' (though at the moment I sort of am on track for a 1st class, though we'll see how the exams go this summer!)

Any information, experiences, absolutely anything would be really useful. Thank you!

Thanks guys. I will try to find out who the admissions contact for that course is and what they say. If that doesn't help directly I'll ask our department's administrator whether she would call them on my behalf. Oh, I hope this is going to straighten out somehow... :-/

Here you go (though if you prefer to email it may be better to use [email protected] rather than the general enquiries email). She may not be the person who can actually make the decision to recognise your application as valid, but if you call her, she should at least be able to point you to someone who can.
Edit: Failing that, try [email protected]

Why? Did he choose a college because a celebrity went there?

Phew! I too got an email informing me that my application was complete and is going to be assessed as part of the January 20th deadline. Was on the verge of striking deals with the devil for this email. I suppose I should shift the deal focus to an acceptance letter now.

I think that's an extremely important criterion; I applied to Trinity mainly because of the yum grub .

Haha, if only you had posted this message a week ago. I'd have picked Trinity as my first choice then.

In fairness it is probably better than my criteria of how good the food is!

Hey, I chose Balliol at least partially because Lord Peter Wimsey "went" there.

I think it's safe to assume it's rained since then.

Just an addendum to my previous post to say that (like a couple of other people, it seems) I finally got an email this morning from Graduate Admissions to confirm that my MSt English application is complete and will be assessed as part of the 20th deadline - it's been just over a week since I sent it in, so I guess they had a load to sort through which were submitted last minute before the deadline!

I think they've been sending them in bulks. I know like 6 people who also got their emails today

I submitted an open application and got my college offer a couple of weeks ago.

Mansfield College for me. I don't mind which college I go to but in hindsight, I would have picked a college that had graduate accommodation in Oxford itself, but oh well!

I'm happy with Mansfield though. I think a smaller college will suit me.
