Oh dear, they are really playing with our nerves, are they? By the way, what did you apply for?

Kind regards,
K

I applied for a DPhil in Oriental studies (January deadline) and I still haven't heard back. I saw the note on the Oriental Studies website that they were ahead of schedule, although their newest update seems to indicate that they don't want people to contact them...
Hello everyone,

I am an Italian student who just got a conditional offer for the MSc in Mathematics and the Foundation of Computer Science beginning on 1 October 2012. I was contacted directly from the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Oxford by post. In this letter they said I should email to [email protected] by 1 April letting them know if I wish to accept the offer and so I did about six days ago.
I know I am probably acting a little paranoid, but they haven't replied to my email yet and I am starting to feel a bit anxious. Do you think I shoud phone them or email them again?
By the way, do you know anything about accomodation at Oxford? Apparently I have to apply for accomodation separately while I was convinced that rooms and meals were going to be automatically offered by colleges (I am still waiting for a college to get in touch with me as I did not express any college preference).

Thanks in advance!

A toad will most likely be stolen by Neville Longbottom as a companion to Trevor. Your best bet will to be turn into an exotic blue snake.

You know the Oxford applicants are going crazy when the application decisions are due any moment and they are discussing Faustus-esque deals with a smattering of Harry Potter references. :eyeball:

I love Faustus - his unquenchable thirst for learning is positively Oxonian.

And yes I am rapidly making my way into the loony bin .

I don't have any personal experience of dealing with the Maths department, but the departments I have dealt with have not generally minded being bothered. Phoning them ought to be preferable as it forces them to give you a response immediately (even if that response is 'we'll check and then contact you') and reminds them that you exist.

Apparently I have to apply for accomodation separately while I was convinced that rooms and meals were going to be automatically offered by colleges (I am still waiting for a college to get in touch with me as I did not express any college preference).

I can't give any hard and fast answers, but:
- most (all? I don't know) colleges have some postgraduate accommodation, and many of them try to house at least most of their first-year postgraduates; when your college contacts you they will probably include a form to apply for accommodation from them -- particularly if you ticked the 'I am planning to apply for college accommodation' box on the application form; the cost, location and quality of college housing for postgrads varies a fair bit.
- the university (separately from the colleges) has some accommodation for postgrads (which may be relevant if you ticked the 'I am planning to apply for university accommodation' box on the form); I know almost nothing about this -- I didn't apply for it, and I don't think I know anyone who lives in university postgrad accommodation; is this what you mean by 'apparently I have to apply for accommodation separately'?

The provision of meals, by the way, varies from college to college also, but the general trend is that the college will offer them fairly cheaply. Some colleges (including mine) require you to spend a certain (fairly small) amount in their dining halls per term (to encourage college cohesion/get more of your money, depending on who you ask). I and most postgrads I know don't eat that often in college, for two reasons: (1) while it's usually cheap, it's not as cheap as cooking for yourself and (2) unlike undergraduates, most of us don't actually live within college boundaries, which makes it less convenient. I'm lucky because my accommodation is located in a way that puts my college on my route into and out of the centre of the city.

I hope some of this was helpful -- and if I said anything misleading or innaccurate, hopefully someone who knows more than I do will point that out -- it's difficult to be specific in helpful ways because there's so much variation and so many different little fiefdoms here. (One of Oxford's downsides is that it has more bureaucracies, which usually have unnecessary layers and are unusually independent from each other, so they don't work together well.)

Hi! I was accepted as a DPhil student in Maths and the same happened to me. After waiting for 6 days for a response I decided to email the Mathematical Institute. They were actually very kind and thanked my email (although they have probably read my first email). I advise you to do the same!

Hi Arcivescovo!

I'm in the same course as you! I received an email a few months back and I sent them the email and they didn't reply to me either! So I sent them another one before the due date asking them to confirm and they did. Perhaps a brief email to them would be worth it.

You could try for the CDL.

Yes I did look into that. But the thought of graduating as a graduate with undergrad and grad loans to pay off is worrying in itself! Particularly with an English degree :/
Got an offer for the MSc Mathematical modelling and scientific computating today. Still can't believe it!

Congrats. If you want me to verify it for you give it me....*runs off with offer*

Which college did you put as your first choice?
So what happens in the interim period, is there a facility to check the status of our application online or something? I arrived quite late on the scene so got no idea of when or what I'm going to hear and what exactly is going on with the process etc. I'm just waiting and watching like my neighbour's adorable little ginger cat does every morning and then blinks its eyes at me to say hello. Aww ^^

First of all thank you very much for your answer.
I am actually a little confused about all this stuff about accomodation and boureaucracy because I didn't really think that I could manage to get in. I wanted to apply to some universities in the UK in order to study abstract mathematics and logic so I applied to Oxford too, more because I felt it was a duty to try since I already planned to write and collect all the stuff (e.g. personal statement, records, references, etc..) for the others.
But then a week later a letter arrived. Apparently I am in if I can manage to pass all my exams by the end of July (Italian university system is very different so it is not so sure I can manage to do so)
I do not remember at all which "accomodation option" I ticked XD
