Got a letter today (dated 15th March) offering me a place on the D.Phil. in English

OMG hard copies arriving already??! Let us know what's in the letter and the postdate too !!!

PS How did the scholarship interview go?

Letter in one hand, champagne in the other: offer for 1550-1700 English MSt, with AHRC funding. EEEEEEE!
(postmarked 15th March!)

You are sad, man, sad . But I kind of know what you mean. *giggle*

The one to watch out for is the devious tourist who practically hangs on to your coat tails (or jeans pocket) to try and follow you into the Bod. Pestilence.

MAN? :emo:

But you're right. The worst is what happened to me the other week - trudged out after a full day of revision, pouring with rain, a North American (could have been Canadian so reserving judgement..) came shambling up to me and demanded I tell them how to get into the Rad Cam. I mumbled something about a Bod card and being a student and cycled away quite irritated..

which college was that? I know my college has a decent collection of MSS.

Ah, it was St John's, not Christchurch -- and I had to visit Merton too, though they were easier because (AFAIK) they haven't had all their MSS microfilmed. The college with the most copies of the text I was looking at is Trinity, but they store their MSS with the Bodleian so I didn't get to visit their library.

Quick (possibly stupid) question, if someone is able to answer it:

If my offer letter has the following:

"Furthermore, I am delighted to inform you that the Faculty has forwarded your name for
nomination for an AHRC studentship. You will be informed of the outcome of this application
by 4th April 2012, once the nominations have been reviewed by the Humanities Division."

does this mean I have a pretty good chance of getting it, or do I have to tough out another round of competition?

hm...weird...the classics department either says: you've been nominated as a reserved candidate, or they say you've been nominated for an AHRC (which means you got it). They don't say anything about being reviewed etc...I wonder if this is because they let us know later (maybe after the Humanities division has already reviewed the nominations?)
I don't want to get you excited for no reason, but I think that this means you got it.

out of curiosity, is this for a DPhil? And did you do your masters at Oxford?

I'm jealous...I also think that since my department lets us know later, I think this means they let us know after the stage on the 4th of April...which means I need to wait another 2-3 weeks...oh god :frown: Why can't they let us know if we've been at least nominated????

I applied few days before Jan 20 deadline, email was sent today.

Congratulations! Would you accept this ahead of the LSE offer?

St John's library seemed spacious and quiet. Lots of dark wooden beams, that sort of thing. I spent most of my time in a secured bit where they store more valuable/older stuff, and most of the time I was focused on the books, to be honest.

I'll PM you about the text I was looking at -- posting it in public might make my identity too obvious if anyone I knew came across this.

Sounds nice. Chch has a reputation of being amazing but thats only the top floor where we aren't allowed to go....

it's OK, I was just curious cause I am also working with MSS, although I am a classicist so I'm sure we aren't working on even remotely similar things
Has anyone from English Mst 1800-1914 heard anything yet? My friend who applied for the 1550-1800 pathway already received her letter!! Freaking out big-time!!

Ahhhhhhhhhh so am I. I've resorted to blogging and reading and drinking.

Congrats!! I'm so jealous right now. Y'all heard so early. I'm so so so nervous. And I didn't tell any of my friends I applied so they probably think I'm crazy.

Nothing in the post here yet. I think I'll piss myself if I get funding.
