    Hi there Student Room,

I'm currently in the Lower Sixth and I'm planning to apply to Cambridge this year to do Human Social Political Science. I'm currently doing RS, Geography, Economics and Politics so I believe it'll be a very good fit for me given what I enjoy.

My question is if anyone could recommend any good background books on IR, sociology, psychology, social anthropology etc. Obviously I don't study any of those subjects so an understanding of them would be invaluable.

    Many Thanks!

Francis Fukuyama's books are a good starting point. Samuel B. Huntington's Clash of Civilizations as well.

Here's a list of psychology books i made.

I wouldn't worry about needing to feel as if you know each subject very well. As long as you demonstrate a good knowledge of one subject, anything else will just be a bonus.
