Xylem vessels question...

State three advantages of the thickening spiral arrangement of the xylem vessels rather than a continuous thickening arrangement.

Does anyone know how?

Maybe..
- Spiral arrangement allows movement and flexibility of vessel - continuous thickening would make vessel more rigid
- Spiraling also ensures water can leave the xylem via the boarded pits - if continuous this would prevent water leaving the xylem vessel as would block pits.

Not sure what a third advantage would be though!

Allows for more flexibility, allows for elongation of xylem, less material used so plant has lower mass
