So I've literally had the same haircut all my life (2 back and sides and a trim on top). There's probably 2.5/3 inches up top atm.

I'm looking to save a bit of money at uni by cutting my own hair and I have a set of clippers, but don't really know what a good combination of numbers would be, or if it's worth trimming the top with scissors myself. Any advice please for a first time barber.

I think you'll struggle to trim the top with scissors. I have a clipper and usually do a 3 on the sides and the longest (8 I think) on the top. The part I find most difficult is blending the two and also achieving a sharp line on my neck at the back (I ask my wife to do the neck). It's not very difficult. I advise trimming the top a little first, then using the 8 all over your head then the 2 - you can always cut it shorter but trying to make the 2 return to an 8 when you've cut too much is impossible.
