    Hi,

I am a first year law student, and found a volunteering opportunity at a small law firm. Can anyone give me any tips to prepare, and how long I should volunteer?

I was told by my lecturer it'd be good to gain experience.

Volunteer for a few months at least. It looks good on your CV and you can develop many skills and get a real insight into what being a solicitor might be like.

Having been a legal intern at various firms, here are some tips which helped me:

    - Always be enthusiastic about tasks, even if they are menial admin tasks.
    - Dress smartly.
    - Ask questions.
    - Offer to help out.
    - Be emotionally savvy. Recognise when it's a good time to ask questions/ help and when others are too busy/ stressed to be pestered.
    - Treat everyone in the office with courtesy, from partners to the receptionist.
