Getting biology or life sciences work experience is difficult for a number of reasons the major of which are insurance, time and money (labs don't always have the time or money to spend on work experience students). Getting work experience is not essential for uni as unis are well aware that getting it is difficult.
However, if you do have work experience it's a good thing to put on your application. Ask your placement provider to contribute to your reference. When you're writing your personal statement make sure you talk about what you've learnt both in terms of skills and knowledge and how it relates to your application. Don't name drop or include unnecessary details! Even if the placement isn't directly relevant to what you want to do, think of the skills you've gained that are relevant.
So the point of this thread is to bring together some links and resources for getting biology or life science work experience so feel free to share your ideas and tips too
Here are a few ideas of places to look:
Other things to look out for are:
Places like the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, zoos etc
Hospitals that take on students for some shadowing
Universities that have schemes to either do projects or shadow
Companies that have formal or informal schemes
Any other contacts that your friends or family may have
Remember that persistence is key, You may get a lot of rejections so don't be let down by that or take it personally, It's a part of life and will prepare you for the real world. Just keep looking and the more you look the more likely you are to find something
