As student money week continues, our English graduate Olivia shares some short, quick tips for student budgeting:

don’t use cash machines that charge

:eating: don’t go grocery shopping on an empty stomach

    use price comparison sites

if you travel to university by bus, consider buying a bus pass

each month, put a portion of your income into a savings account

 collect any change that you get or find in a jar. You’ll be surprised at how quickly this can build up

:cookie: buy used textbooks and sell last terms books back

work where you shop! If there’s a particular shop you love, it’s likely that one of the staff perks is a discount on every purchase.

Can you add anything to our list?

    Happy saving :bird:

Don't buy textbooks unless you actually need them. Even then libraries often have resources and most information is free online anyway

Do everything in bulk. Do washing in bulk, by food in bulk, cook in bulk, etc. Bulk saves money

Set budgets and plans for things and actually stick to them. If you have £50 to spend on all your nights out in a month then split it accordingly. If you can't afford it then don't go. If you have a shopping list stick to it. However...

Seek out offers. Even if you don't need something right now, buy it if you'll need it in the future. If you see toilet rolls going cheap for example grab them now. Stockpiling for later saves money down the line

Running is free, things like weights are generally inexpensive. Don't pay for expensive gym memberships when you can exercise in other ways

    Find inexpensive hobbies

Make the most of what institutions, especially uni offer you. Odds are you have free access to computers, libraries, possibly public transport and a whole host of other benefits
