Why would the structure of CO2 be simple molecular lattice but for SO2, it would be giant covalent lattice? I thought if you have carbon/ Si in the molecule, the structure would always be giant covalent lattice.

    Thanks

    Structure of silicon dioxide
Both elements can form simple molecules and giant structures. Most compounds are simple.

You just have to learn the few giant structures that are appropriate for your course.

    CO2 is simple molecular
    SiO2 is giant molecular
