Two capacitors of capacitance C1 = 500 nF and C2 = 1.5 μF are connected in series across a cell with emf V = 8V.
What is the energy stored on C1?

You know that the charge on each capacitor in series is equal. So the total charge is equal to the charge on and so
You have your e.m.f (total voltage) and total capacitance (use the equation to work out the total capacitance in series).
Use which will give you your total charge as well as the charge on (and ).
I did not use the two other energy equations because they involve voltage and in series, the voltage across and capacitors are different so it would be a longer process.
