The Government’s £60 million criminal investigation into British troops in Iraq is to be shut down within months after a Telegraph campaign that exposed the ‘witch hunt’ of war heroes.

This is symptomatic of a few ills in our society, ranging from the thrall to the HR priesthood to the lack of body by far too many 'politicians'. Leaving aside all nationalist forms of exuberance, it is a national disgrace to send the troops on political enterprises dubious as Iraq and then put them through what they have had to endure since returning in one piece. Too many of them made to dance and suffer to the tune of some creep driven by nothing but material gain. To cap that, we were paying him for it and all.

Yes, there is a need for sensible checks and balances on the troops' conduct when at war but how can anyone say this was a sensible process? Surely he ought to be dragged to court and landed with a hefty blow, if that doesn't happen we have the end of civilization as we know it.

Most likely not to happen because politicians will prefer to put it to rest.
