Im also interested in mechanical engineering, infact im at a uni ucas day today. The work experience which I did was at a major steel company, it was a great experience. I was able to observe all types of mechanical engineering ( e.g. Testing, CAD designing, manufactuing) including getting involved in these myself.

    Thank you Rexar.

Do you mind sharing where you did your work experience and how did you apply?

Sure, I did my work experience at sheffield steel forgemasters international. To apply just ask, send a formal email or even go to the place to ask in person.

It's not going to be particularly useful or representative of the career to be honest. You'd be better off spending the same amount of time learning how to do 3D CAD or, if you can, CFD or FEA. Or if there's a workshop somewhere willing to teach you how to use workshop equipment that would be much better than going to a mechanical engineering firm.

Contact local firms to see if you can pick up anything. I wouldn't get too hung up about it though since it won't really form part of the admissions process to university if you do manage to get something, which is quite rare.
