What do you think the chances are of someone studying at Sheffield University (who is predicted a 1st class degree) getting into KCL to do a masters programme? Do you think the KCL admissions team will look at this person's application and think 'Sheffield is a little too low in the league tables for us to consider'. Is the jump from Sheffield to KCL too much? Should this person settle for places like Nottingham, Manchester, Leeds and York instead?

Would it be more natural (and successful) to go from say Manchester/York/Nottingham to KCL, and from Sheffield/Liverpool/Newcastle to Manchester/York/Nottingham to do a masters?

No, both routes would be perfectly possible.

No one cares about what uni you went to. All they care about is that 1st class.
