& i think that's what the study referred to, although perhaps it was just based on existing students, of which slightly more are female.. although with regards to hair colour.. probably even blonde/dark, hmm..
I have to say that our college's first year has been commented upon as having "loads of really pretty girls and no nice men," which could quite arguably be true
Asnac - as long as it's not a strong bias, that's fine. I agree with Jools' point about presentation.

First of all I did not ever bring hair colour into it. Secondly I was not referring to a study done on Oxbridge admissions, but rather general studies done on interviews, interviewers, etc., which have clearly and consistently shown that people are slightly more predisposed to attractive people. This even occurs when straight men (or women) interview people of their own sex. Now obviously the predisposition must then be backed up with actual ability, but one is slightly more likely to look for this ability in such cases.
Bottom line is I, like many in Cambridge, am very average looking and got in. I'm merely pointing out that any interview system is subject to this slight influence.
The problem here comes with cultural/religious dress. Apparently having a turban is a disadvantage when applying for professional jobs but you see a lot who wear turbans who look very smart and presentable. But Virgin are currently being sued by a Muslim who was sacked after refusing to remove his beard. But he really did not look presentable.
They claim that he was sacked after probation as he was a bad platform assistant. They seemed to be quite accomodating- they would allow him to ware a turban - in Virgin colours and have a beard of a certain length. There could also be safety reasons for this - a long bread could be grabbed by an angry passneger after eving one of Virgin's train trips from hell. If you do not look smart than a public facing job like this is not for you.

Rumour has it one of the interviewers for music at Sidney got sacked last year after they twigged that the reason all our musicians are female is not necessarily that they were all better than any male applicants...!! Lech!

eww! i've had enough of pervy staff, don't tell me there's more!
I see, but they could not take 95% state and 5% privately educated really good they? Meaning they do have quotas to an extent? I see what you are saying though.
I wasn't saying they were better than those, but well, they all seem to have like 5 ancient languages then 5 modern languages, with loads of extra curricular shit, 10 million A*s, fantastic education from early ages... would they pick them all if they could?
i dont think its neccessarily a quota but a want to have a student body that encorporates a wide variety of peoople from all backgrounds and schools. I think in a lot of cases its more a question of admission tutors thinking, 'hold on, the students we have picked so far are mostly from this type of background/school, lets try and look at some from this other area'. Yes, on an individual level this may be unfare, but with unis that have such a high application level from public schools, they have a unique situation with unique problems. It seems whatever they do to try and make the system 'better', they get their wrists slapped along the way somewhere. I am really not sure there is a perfect solution that would satisfy everyone.

I've not met the guy in a year so hopefully you won't run into him either Not that I'm denying the existence of any other pervy staff in Cambridge - I'm sure there are plenty!

I doubt they're at Caius...apparently its over 65% male
One of my interviewers spent the whole interview (well the whole 8 or 9 minutes) with her hand down her blouse . Then in my second interview a bloke did the same thing!! I am not sure if thay all had a rash or something, or if it was a signal to the other person! (Once the hand went down the shirt/blouse the other person started frantically writing stuff down - must have been good things i hope!)

Lol...you should've done the same thing...put your hand into your shirt.....and give each of them a sly wink every now and then
Talking of fit, apparently male tutors are likely to have a subconscious preference for women as they are attracted to them, even though they are now aware of it as it is so slight!
Except Oriel tutors, they like to pick fit males; often one's who are 6'4", about 15 stone, and are found around the Henley-on-Thames region on the last week end in June.

Hehe, we hear similar rumours about why there is such a large male section (inc. countertenors) receiving choral scholarships (they are brilliant though)

Hmm...my English teacher went to Clare a while ago. He sings higher than the 11 year old kids in my school. Are you sure there isn't some kind of castration policy for the Clare choir?
