    As for what the German football coach and other celebrities are doing there, that is because Germans are sensible and don't subscribe to a celebrity worship culture these days.

    This is important because the president is of the SPD, the centre-left-wing part of the governing coalition, and polls have recently shown that the SPD has rapidly closed the gap with Merkel's centre-right-wing CDU (who previously had a huge margin in their favour).
