so since my inorganic knowledge is pretty poor (teacher didnt have time to go through it so i had to teach myself and that NEVER goes well), the first thing that went in my head was "flame test".

You react them with conc. HCl to get the metal ions and then heat them to get different coloured flames....

this isnt on the mark scheme. Am i wrong or is the mark scheme harsh?

I think maybe your answer is not what they were looking for. Maybe if you said that put HNO3 into HCl and then add AgNO3 or NaNO3. If a white precipitate is formed then it is AgCl showing that the substance added was AgNO3. That's what I would say

yeah after talking to my friend turns out the flame test only works for group 2 metals and sodium is group 1 while silver is transition. then loads of other complications which i didnt understand

On top of what I said about the white ppt, you could add dil NH3 and the white ppt will dissolve if AgNO3 was added - this is my best guess

yeah the mark scheme is very open about what you can put.
1. any hydrogen halide, silver one produces respective colour precipitate, silver is colourless.
2. any hydroxide or carbonate, silver makes precipitate, silver colourless.

Hopefully what I said helped. If you need any clarification on what I said then I can always do that for you
