The elucidation of ALL the genes in the human chromosomes, which chromosome each gene is on, and the actual order/sequence.

Its applications include gene therapy, whereby we can replace an abnormal gene (that causes a particular disease) with a normal one e.g. the tranlocator gene in cystic fibrosis (patients never reached age of 10 30 years ago, now live to 50 on average)

Look up:
a) PCR
b) restriction enzyme
c) ligase

Hi Liv,

As from Wiki (though teachers don't like it in most places?):

"The Human Genome Project (HGP) was an international scientific research project with the goal of determining the sequence of nucleotide base pairs that make up human DNA, and of identifying and mapping all of the genes of the human genome from both a physical and a functional standpoint."

Feel free to ask if you would like an alternate definition.

Thanks and good luck,
