Are you sure that the Oxford Union membership gets more expensive on the 30th? The deadline for cheaper membership is usually a lot later into term otherwise none of the freshers would be able to join at the discounted price.

Special Offer! Last year's price of £162 held for those applications reveived by 30 September 07

£170 (or £190 if applying after Thursday 18 October

Seems there is 2 deadlines

Yup they do one really early, then one which is the freshers' amnesty and then full price. I think you're gonna have to leave it blank, since there's no way to get your bodcard number in advance

leave it blank- i didn't have a problem last year.

Where did you see that? I looked on the website but didn't see that?

It seems like I need to be there in person to join and I arrive in Oxford on Friday 28 September so I suppose I'll probably have to get the £170 one.

On a related note, is the union actually worth joining? I'm pretty keen but it's still a lot of money!

Its on the sheet of paper (membership form) I got in the freshers pack, on the top in red writing.

You are in Oxford before the deadline, so you should get in for £162

Ah, I don't think I have a freshers pack but I'm going to be a postgrad student (at a postgrad college) so I guess they don't send those out to us? :frown: Is it from your college or from the student union? I got some things from my college; handbook, doctors registration forms, gown hire flyers etc.

I'll be arriving late on Friday the 28th and then it'll be the weekend so I doubt I'll be able to make the deadline by going into the office in person unless it's open on the weekend.

What does the flyer say about the union and are there any other useful things in the pack?

It came in a package of stuff from the Student Union, (with a big sticker on it explaining the difference between the Union and the Students Union -- I could see how that could be confusing.)

There wasnt much useful in the pack to be honest, just the standard stuff. The flyer just explained what the union is, listed some famous speakers and I think mentioned the cheap bar / subisdised balls.

Im postulating, but its possible the reason you didnt get a form is because its cheaper for you because you arent in Oxford for as long or something like that?

Try it in the weeks where you can get in for free. If you like the place and find yourself spending time there, join. Lots of it will depend on your college, etc.

I'm doing a D.Phil so will be there for at least 3 years - probably 3 and a half

Bearing in mind that you join the Union for life, not for the duration of your degree, the amount of time you study in Oxford for is irrelevant. And yes, the Union is open weekends

Is the bar members only? Can members take x number of guests in with them?

You can take members into the bar or the Purple Turtle if you pay an entry fee - was £3 last time I checked but it's been a while
I pay £5 at the PT, usually posing as being from a uni other than Oxford as occasionally they're arsey about Oxford students who don't join.

you can't take oxford (uni or brookes) into the union as guests. Just pretend to be from a different uni/none students. Don't fall for their trick of asking for bod cards.
Didn't know Brookes people get the chop too - does that mean they can become members?

Yes, but they get it for the 3 years they are in Oxford rather than for life.
