Ahhh people are discovering the wonders of Kent Hospitality (or not so in this case). Every bed is rock hard, you are not alone. They know you are students so will try and squeeze as much money out of you as possible, especially when it comes to giving your deposit back.
I'm not suggesting they are trying to scam you out of YOUR money but let's say they like to keep it for themselves because their work is so darned hard and requires a little bonus.....haha.
My advice is to just keep your room/kitchen area nice and tidy so the cleaners and the Hospitality people have nothing to complain about.

Ack! I am really not liking the pub crawl/drink yourself stupid scene. So I feel really anti-social as I'm mostly in my room or wandering about aimlessly! I'm in 5/C Nickel Court Parkwood.. and I'm studying Politics. So far I'm the only guy from England living down my dorm (though I am enjoying meeting people from different backgrounds). I currently have an American, an Indian and a German guy - they're all pretty nice guys too.

If anyone has a games console for example (although no football/racing - because I'm crap!), I'm available if you've got a free pad. :P

P.S. My name is Aaron.. I'm 6"4', I forget people's names often and have a bad short-term memory.. other than that I don't bite! :P

Two girls I'm living with invited me to go to Woody's with them, but being the social klutz that I am, I was like..."Er i'm a bit busy, but have fun." lol.

There's 3 international students living on my floor, which is great. I can add to my "foreign dirty words" repertoire.

Oh, it's not too far.. apparently the politics lectures will be in your building - and I bet I'll see you tomorrow at the politics induction thingy.. :P Remember, I'm 6"4', tanned, jet black hair .. I'll be surprised if you miss me! Oh and I'm also taking the Science Fiction module from the History department!

You know, we should all meet and go and sit down somewhere.. it'll be nice to meet people who feel the same way (a bit shakey).. I was actually really brave and invited a dorm buddy to 'The Venue' for Sunday night's entertainment.
A frickin' guy actually DID regurgitate tons of weird stuff.. like cigarette smoke INSIDE a bubble.. he also downed like a pint of washing up liquid too! Then there was some cack hypnotist... as soon as he was off - me and my friend agreed to get out of there. It was actually a really nice time - I drank some cider (I think I'll stick to diet coke! lol) which is like for the 2nd time in my life.. but I really am confident that I don't have to change who I am to have a good time. So when I meet my 'click', I'm sure that they'll understand that I'm not in to getting bladdered (and not even a huge fan of alcohol) just like my school friends did.
Another big + was that I met a guy from my old college! We get on really well, and he is really in to Politics as well so I'm happy.
I am so sure that you will finally become more comfortable and will definitely find some friends who 'get' you.

Take care!

Anyone going to the Darwin "welcome" thingor? Maybe I can meet some of you there. Alternatively, I have the Humanities induction at 2.00.

Yeah, i'll be there. I havn't even been to that building yet. I'm still feeling quite shakey. I don't really get on with the people in my building so i can't help but wake up and miss home every morning. It putting such a downer on my experience and i end up feeling terrible for the day...

Lmao! United by our interest in Sci-Fi, I'm sure we'll get along! :P
I do not understand, why do people drink so so much. I am not saying that it is everyone but it is just madness. And it is every night. Do people not care about their health? And whatever happened to normal drinks? Non-alcoholic drinks? Why do people have to drink so much then be screaming down the streets half the night. If there were different people here. Id love it totally. Just that bothering me a bit really.

Aw, I'm sorry! I left really early and didn't check on here before going. If it helps, I felt a right loser walking around on my own. The Darwin thing was pointless anyway, and I got a dead leg after they made us squish together and sit cross-legged like primary school children.

I went into the town center afterwards, and I only just got back, so i've missed the Humanities thing that was meant to be at 2pm. Can anyone recap any information they gave?

OMG, I couldn't sleep last night cos of the loud drunks *RIGHT* outside my window. It's fine for now, cos it's fresher's week and all that, but if it continues into the academic year on a regular basis, i'm gonna go mental.

I had my politics one and it was just basic information about the course, giving general outlines. Though they introduced us to the staff who work at the library who specialise in politics. They also gave out a handbook which gives help with essay-writing and info on modules.

Not a lot of it was new to me and much is common sense e.g. if you don't attend seminars - you will be in trouble!

They also told us about the departmental activities going on during the week as well.
Have a look at the Humanities page on the Kent.ac website and browse around, I'm sure that the information is there.

How was your trip to the town centre? I need to go there as well, so I don't feel trapped. :P I'll probably be doing some volunteer work too so I'm uh gonna have to wander around anyway!

And what interested you about the Sci-Fi module? Personally, I'm a huge Star Trek fan because I really enjoy the depth of the 'universe'. Uhm, I'm sure if we met up we'd be able to have a chat.. I am open to nearly everything to do with Sci-Fi. Oh and I'm missing Heroes on the BBC :frown:!

Rofl, I laughed at that too. I felt sorry for the Hugh guy, as whenever he went to speak - people walked out in droves. I don't think it takes too much to show some respect and stay for at least the length of the talks... oh well, that maybe just me though.

Thanks for the info. There's a Religious Studies subject meeting on Thursday, so I'm hoping they'll cover anything essential. The town centre's really nice, but completely full of students as you'd expect. Everything you'd ever need is right there, so I managed to get the bulk of my shopping done. The Unibus gets really packed, though, so you have to be quick to get a decent seat.

The Sci-Fi module interested me because it's something I know I won't get bored with. Anything that's not the norm and challenges your imagination grips me, and i've always loved Sci-Fi as a genre, whether it be movies, books, or TV. Weirdly, i've never actually watched Star Trek. I almost feel like it's a pre-requisite to take this course. :p:
