It's exciting but is anyone else nervous?

Reply 41

More nervous about the completion and interview stage then the course itself :-/

I feel sick about making the decision. Its been that long coming round that over the period of time its took to come round I have now got myself into a brilliant job as a Pupil and Family Support Manager and SENCo, which I love. I'm now at the top of the 'tree' and cant get any further with my career as I havent got QTS, even though Ive got a teaching degree. Do I stay in a job that I love that's took me a long time getting to or train in a career that I have wanted to go into for a long time?!? Arghhh

Hi
I was in cohort 4 of step up which finished a few weeks ago.
Just thought this may be helpful as I've seen a few people speaking about timeframes:
I was told I had got through to the assessment centre stage in May, and in June was offered a range of dates from the end of June to the beginning of July for the assessment centre.
I was then informed that I had been successful at the beginning of August.
Of course this may vary depending on the LA - mine was Surrey and South East London.
I loved the course and would definitely recommend it.
Good luck!

Hi, what kind of experience did you have before applying if you don't mind me asking?

Hi,

I had experience as a TA and support worker, working with the elderly and voluntary work with vulnerable adults.

Hey, thanks so much for reaching out! I think a lot of us here are worried about the application and interviews. Do you have any tips of what they're looking for? Also- if you have any idea of what they're NOT looking for too! lol

Thanks in advance

No problem
I was worried too! Try to display a knowledge of current issues within social work - community care website is good for this. It'd be worthwhile to familiarise yourself with the Professional Capabilites framework too. I think there's info on the step up website on what they want you to know too.
Above all just ensure you use relevant experience and relate it to social work, and display why you want to get into the profession.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the post. It is great to hear from somebody who has been through it. I notice that you said you were a TA. As mentioned above I'm in a predicament in that I have now waited so long for Step up to Start that I am now enjoying what I am doing (Im a Pupil Support Manager in a secondary PRU). Did you ever have any doubts about applying?

Hi

Thanks for posting this information. I have a child and I'm not sure if I should wait for my little one to be older. What are the hours studying and working?

Thank you

Hey guys,
I'm currently at university studying Education Studies and Early Years, I graduate in July!
I have a place to study the social work MA at my local university but realistically I think financially for me its just not going to work, I really want to do Step Up!
I'm just wondering what the assessment days are like and if anybody knows anything about them? Like what they include etc?
Experience wise i'm a child counsellor at Childline and I do community support work with disabled children and adults. I have also worked in a nursery and primary schools.
Thanks!

Do you already have a degree or is this your first one?
You won't be able to apply without evidence of your degree like your certificate.
I was in this position for cohort 4 I was going to apply in the April/may time but couldn't because I didn't graduate until July!!

No way!! This is my first degree, that's so silly!! So did you apply but didn't get through because you didn't have your certificate yet?

I didn't apply because as I went through looking at the application it said that you needed to provide evidence of your degree which you can't do with out your certificate :frown:
So I graduated July 2015 and have had to wait until now to apply although now I see that as a positive because I have so much more experience than I would have back in 2015.

Ohhh wow I'm gutted, I'm waiting to see if the masters bursaries have been cut or not. If they have looks like I'll be taking a year out.
Thanks guys

Does anyone who's done this course know more about entry qualifications. I've got a 2;2 in Chemistry from a Russell Group University and PGCE with 3 years teaching experience in a secondary school. I believe that the PGCE is a level 7 qualification but I don't quite get why a 2;2 in Quantum Physics from Oxford wouldn't get you a place but a 2;1 in 'Photography' from 'Norwich Trinity' would.

Hi, I am looking to apply in the same LA's.

I would love some advice on the process if you dont mind?

The Government website states it's opening on 28th March if you submit your email address they should contact you.

Probably best contacting step up to ask them directly. Although there were plenty of people in the last cohort with degrees (2:1 and above) from non Russell Group Universities. Thankfully, no one seemed to have your attitude to the degrees we studied and places which we studied at.
