Its down behind the gate, i dont think their is a free bus. But the number 5 runs right past van mildert which would take you into town then it a short walk up some steps to the gate complex (Get off at clay path bridge)

There's a Water Polo Club, so you can definitely do that.

Maybe Google the society and email them...?

I read theres a new pool in durham - constant depth- where water polo takes place. Does anyone know where it is and/or when waterpolo roughly is (ie late at night or evening like 6 ish).

This is all I could find: http://www.dcasc.org.uk/

The pool is near the centre of town, close to the Gala cinema. It'll be about 25-30 minutes walk between Mildert and the pool. I haven't actually been there though so I can't tell you much more, I'm afraid.

About the buses- i read theres a bus service round the durham and that its free, or am i mistaken. How regular are the buses also.

Not to my knowledge, sorry. There's a bus from Butler College (close to Mildert) to town but it's £1 an all-day ticket for students.
Actually, here's the uni team page:
http://www.teamdurham.com/universitysport/university_clubs/waterpolo/

Looks like they may use the same pool. Emailing the captain is probably a good idea.

It's almost impossible to answer this because everybody is different with regards to things like how much they drink, how often they go home, how much they spend on their phone and whether or not they like to buy lots of shoes.

Yes a good point, thank you.

I certainly realize that costs may vary, etc. However, seems as I am a foreign student who has not lived in the UK before I was hoping that a few people would be kind enough to give me a rough idea of how much they spend per week/ month (outside of rent). I have no intention of enlarging my shoe collection, eating michelin star meals every night, or buying a fancy phone--just the basics (groceries, transport, a few beer here and there, and misellaneous)--just for a general idea.

Many thanks!
Just like any city, there are buses, but there are no free buses. What you're probably thinking of is the cathedral bus which was brought in after the congestion zone around the Bailey was created. It goes from the railway station to the cathedral and back throughout the day. But it's not free. There are plenty of other buses which operate inside and outside the city, but privately run. The only bus that students can get free is the X1 to Queens Campus.

The new swimming pool, I don't know when the water polo is on, all I know is that the pool closes at 10:30 on a weekday. You could try emailing the captain of the university's polo club and get some info from him.

The pool is in the Claypath area (near the city library, Gala theatre, Loveshack) right by the river. Not even ten minutes walk from Elvet Riverside

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=DH1+1SG&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=16.764146,39.375&ie=UTF8&ll=54.778118,-1.569157&spn=0.00797,0.019226&t=h&z=16

If that doesn't work just go to Google maps and look at DH1 1SG or "Freeman's Quay Leisure Centre".

I'm sorry if this question has been asked and answered already but...

I got an unconditional offer from Durham (hatfield college) and I am going to make it my insurance choice. Is there anything I have to do for accommodation/ forms for housing that need to be sent if Durham is my insurance choice? I know with other schools you can only send in an application form if its your firm choice and to be honest I haven't really gotten a lot of information from Durham about anything sooo... I wasn't quite sure what was going on.

Also, my offer was originally conditional and then I got an email from track months after my orignal acceptance saying that it was changed to an unconditional offer. Is that a bit strange or does that happen?

Thanks in advance!

wow you got an unconditional offer before you've got your results! how did you manage that?
Hellooo
I have an odd question.. I've got an offer for castle and basically all I can now think about are the secret passages and hollow walls. Can anyone confirm whether there are such features and does anyone know if there is a marauder's map (errr not that I want to attack people?!). If not, aaaanyone interested in going around castle with a stethoscope and finding the passage which, allegedly, leads to China (and other such things)...?

All Freshers at Durham including Hatfield College, live in college so dont worry. If you accept Durham they will give you all the accomm info in august.
Hi I've got an offer for History and French,

Of course I know History is known for being great at Durham so I'm deleighted to have got an offer ... However I've noticed that students only get 1 seminar every three weeks per history module as opposed to one a week at say Warwick. So I was just wondering how supported Hisotry students feel by the department and if they feel this is enough and one a week would be too much... or whether you would in fact like more contact time and therefore this could be a factor that might make me prefer Warwick?
Thanks

One seminar a week would be an awful lot of work - if you were to prepare for them all properly, along with the essays you'll have to do, then I think that you'd be overwhelmed (especially when you've got your essays to research and prepare for). I don't know how the workload at Warwick is spread, and I don't think it's as simple to say that Warwick have more hours in seminars, therefore the contact is better. For example, the seminar groups there may be larger, and you might not need to do as much preparation for them. I'm not trying to knock Warwick at all - I was very tempted to accept their offer back in 2007 and I think that the course is fantastic and the staff made a really big effort at the open day to make prospective students feel welcomed.

In all honesty, History is very much a self-directed degree - most of your learning will be done on your own and you'll work out your own way of writing essays, balancing the work you should be doing with the other stuff you'll inevitably get involved with, and seminars will help you to explore and expand your thoughts, but it's unlikely that they'll put them there. Given that, at Durham. you only have to study 4-6 topics for each exam, having a seminar on every topic the lectures will cover would be somewhat futile.

The department are fantastic and really accessible - you can email them with questions or catch them in lectures, and most are happy to arrange a time for you to drop by their office for a chat.
Great, thanks  I mean, well I'm still completely torn!! But now at least I know that I have nothing to worry about if i decide to accept (and hopefully get in!) to Durham.
Just out of interest, if you don't mind, what made you choose Durham in the end? And what modules did you/do you take in the more modern history options, and how did you/do you like them?
Thanks again

I did Experiencing Empire, Individual and Society in Germany and Crises, Progress, Power (or was it Power then Progress? I can't remember!). Experiencing Empire was horribly dull, but I now know that I don't like imperial history, so it wasn't a total waste of time (I might have been tempted to take some of the modules on Africa this year if I'd not known how much it bored me). The first half of ISG was really dull, but it was remedied by a fantastic and interesting second term programme on the history of the two Germanies after WWII, which I'd previously known nothing about (in contrast to the 1919-1945 period, which I never want to have to learn about again). The lecturer for CPP isn't brilliant, but his seminars are fantastic and he's a really lovely and helpful member of the department (although some feel that he's a harsh marker, if you work hard and actually prepare for seminars you'll learn a lot from him). This year, I do Native and Minority Rights, The American Half Century and Wars, Crises, Decline, all of which are fantastic (although the NAM module is quite social and abstract at times - I like more "concrete", traditional history, but each to their own).

What ultimately swung it for me was that I really didn't want to have to do 2 more years of languages (I had terrible experiences of German A Level), and I thought that I'd go absolutely loopy stuck in the middle of nowhere at Warwick (I think that the campus is a bit like Marmite - you definitely either love it or hate it). Both of the courses have their merits, and being a joint honours student you can avoid medieval history (which I hate, but have had to do 2 years of).

hi everyone!

I love basketball and I am a future Durham student. Are there any opportunities for me? How many possible teams there are?

Moreover, how many hours per week last the classics courses?

That's all I know.

About the classics course, just look up all your possible modules on the Durham website ( http://www.dur.ac.uk/faculty.handbook/module_search/?year=2008&search_dept=CLAS&search_level=1 ), it usually says how many lectures/seminars etc there are per week.

Hiya, does anyone know what date/s we can arrive for freshers week? UCAS says we start on 1st October, but that's a Thursday, and my parents are gonna bring me up which means we can only come on a weekend because dad's a teacher. So do we just come the weekend after or have things started already by then? :s-smilie: Sorry if it says this somewhere or has already been asked.
