I wouldn't bother with a bike - nowhere in Durham is particularly far to walk and it has evil hills.

I grew up in Durham and pretty much biked everywhere, would be useful for those who live in the Bailey colleges and want to go up the the library and departments at the science site then it'll be worth while, however if both college and department are next door to each other it's probably less important. I'll definitely be bringing a bike when i do my postgrad course but then again i'll be living in Brakenbury and spending most of my time in the city centre.
Do you need to bring your own duvet/ pillows etc? Also are you allowed kettles/ toasters/ fan heaters in your rooms?
Mildert btw

I think most colleges will sell you a bedding pack (I know my college offer this service) but you'll probably prefer to bring your own. The bedding pack idea is probably more to help out international students who can't bring a great deal with them.

As far as kettles, toasters etc go, it all depends on the college and possibly the specific hall. When i did my undergraduate degree, my uni allowed everyone to have kettles and only those with special medical requirements to have fridges and the like. Toasters were banned anywhere other than kitchens because of how sensitive the smoke alarms were. Fan heaters might be a no too because of the potential fire risk. The residency agreement will probably outline what you can and can't use in your room as far as electrical things go. If that doesn't help just ring the college in question and ask.

Toasters and, I assume, fan heaters, would be a definite no-no in Mildert rooms. You'll be alright with a kettle. To be honest, you won't be cold in college as the heating is quite intense. I've never been cold in college. By all means bring a toaster, just take it to the kitchen to use (don't leave it in there though, it might walk).

A quick one :
Internet connection in rooms - can you access sites like youtube, demand 5, iplayer ? If yes, do the videos take forever to load or is the connection reasonably ok?

Just thinking as I wouldn't bother buying a laptop to bring with me to uni if I can't access these sites.

Cheers

The internet connections in rooms are (or have been so far) almost completely unrestricted, and with excellent speed. There's a short list of outright banned sites somewhere, mostly porn ones, but you can access just about anything unrestricted.

A small number of other sites do allegedly have bandwidth limits placed on them, most notably facebook. You should be able to access it fine, but I think it can slow down if many people are visiting it or have been recently.

You *cannot* use things like the iplayer app (and 4OD etc.), as far as I know, though they're becoming a little more lenient. That is, you'll be able to view iplayer on the bbc website but not use the download application.

I think that's all up to date, but I haven't lived in for a while now.

I don't care for Facebook, so that shouldn't be a problem :P
Yep I usually watch iplayer and demand five videos without downloading them, so that should be fine too.

yey @ excellent speed!!

Thanks for your help

Oh! Remembered something else :P
How do people do their laundry in college? Do you pay to use the washing machines? How much does it cost if so? And how often are you allowed to use them?
Hi, has anyone tried putting their DUO email account on to their Blackberry? Did it work?

Also, during the resit period, does the DSU open? and more importantly, is it true Klute opens up again?

Think a few college bars are open, but not much else. As for DSU, I doubt it a lot. Klute you might have a chance though with.

There's no reason this shouldn't work perfectly, the ITS allow download to almost all modern email clients nowadays.
iplayer works, 4OD works, youtube works etc. etc. Almost seamless downloading in HD, except during peak times of course.

As for the washing machines question, Cuths at least had laundries. £1.50 for a wash, 50p for a dry. Old 2ps worked in the drier though in place of 50ps.

In Butler, it's £1.50 for a wash and 50p for a dry. You need 50p coins though (or a pound and a fifty pence in the case of the washing machines) - I suggest that you start collecting these now.

50p's! Collect as many 50p coins as you can. I got my family to collect theirs with the intention of buying them off them, and they gave 'em to me

but as I remember reading on here somewhere before I headed to Durham, 50ps are worth their weight in gold at uni :yep:

Yeah they're like gold-dust! Even though I'm living out now I STILL keep all my 50ps. I think I'll set up shop in Fonteyn Court laundry selling 50ps to freshers.
You should sell them to me, I have no one who can collect them for me :p:

I have 8. I will sell them to you for £5 :colone:
