In Butler, it's £1.50 for a wash and 50p for a dry. You need 50p coins though (or a pound and a fifty pence in the case of the washing machines) - I suggest that you start collecting these now.

Too much effort - a quick trip to the bank solves the problem.

The girl's got business acumen I'll give her that much... Now all she needs is a scholarship to Sandhurst.

I have a question about colleges. How much of a difference does the size of the college make in terms of it's 'feel' or 'personality'? If there anything you can do if you feel the college you were put in just doesn't fit you? I realise this sounds a bit wishy washy but I've been trying to convince myself to like the college I've been put in for months now and it's just not working - I'm convinced it's too big for me and I'll just get overwealmed by it all. Is there anyone out there who felt that way before going to Durham? How much of an issue was it?

Sorry about the vast number of questions but it's bothering me more than it really should and I'd really like some input on this. :frown:
Cuths is the second largest I believe, but it feels remarkably close knit. The size adds to the general atmosphere in that you know there's always going to be somebody at the bar or something going on. It also means that our nights out at clubs are usually packed.

I know that some people find Johns oppressive given how small it is and they like to get out, but other people like that and find it reassuring.

Most of it is down to your attitude I reckon, but the size does have an effect.
Hi

I'm looking at doing Natural Sciences at Durham Uni, and I noticed that the places for those wanting to do Chemistry are restricted. Does anyone know what number this is restricted to?

I wanted to go to a college that's close to the Science Site, so is Grey my best bet? And how far is the work to the department and into the city centre?

With regard to NatSci options, could I take a mixture of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics modules in my first year? Are there any restrictions?

Thanks

£1.50 for a wash!
Can't they just let us do our washing for free? It's catered accomodation after all :p:
I'm guess I'm just gonna have to learn to wear my clothes more than once before putting them in the wash :frown:

If it's any comfort, the washing machines in college are massive.

They don't publish that AFAIK.

Mary's is just as close, though any hill college is no more than 10 mins away.

You could do in theory, though bear in mind you have to take Maths with Physics too - so such a combination could be quite difficult to implement. Also to take Chemistry you have to have it named in your offer.

Haha, it does sound like the solution to both of our problems, doesn't it? Which college were you aiming for originally?

I was hoping for either Hatfield, Cuths or Collingwood really, so I left an open application which I know regret. I was put into Mary's which isnt that big.....I was hoping for a big sporty college really!!!! Dammmm

Aw man! That sucks. :frown:

I'm the COMPLETE opposite - my RS teacher is an ex-Chadian and converted me somewhat. Not good, considering how small and over-subcribed it is... *sigh*

Oh well, I hope you manage to get moved to somewhere more suited to you
couple of questions

1) whats the best way to get your stuff to durham? i want to bring quite a large items (tv, guitar) to durham, more than i could just cram in a suitcase and take a train with and im not sure if ill be able to get a family member to drive me up at that time.

2) whats the policy on guitars/amps? we're allowed them as long as we keep the volume low right?

3) id like to bring my homebrew stuff, its legal and doesnt take up that much room, and much cheaper than drinking in public. this is permitted... i hope?

4) is there any live music in durham? rock/indie/pop/whatever bands, that is, not classical music students etc - not that i dont appreciate a bit of classical

5) are the sports clubs seasonal? meaning is football in spring, basketball in winter, and so on? is it realistic to try and do 3 or 4 clubs at once? i managed in school with a fair amount of homework alongside 3 hours of lacrosse practice and football twice a week at one point in school. of course, i dont how the work load or club expectations compare though (doing biology).

6) what are the chances i'll have to share a room in collingwood? i cant seem to find any exact numbers on this, and im worried. i dont mind having a room mate, its just i like my organised chaos but i dont want to burden other people with my mess.

wowsers that was a ramble

Well, if you can't get somebody to drive you up there's always http://www.stuff2send.com/. I have no experience with this site, but it's the only way I can think.

Yup. If you're lucky your college will have a music room like Cuths did.

3) id like to bring my homebrew stuff, its legal and doesnt take up that much room, and much cheaper than drinking in public. this is permitted... i hope?

What they don't know won't hurt I guess. They're not going to go through your things :P

Cuths has an acoustic night every once in a while but no, Durham's not a spot for live music unfortunately.
Wasn't there a rumour that there was going to be an O2 Academy in Durham soon though?

2) Yes and Collingwood does have a music room.

5) Well the first two terms are autumn/winter and most (not cricket and tennis I think) sports play through both these terms. The leagues finish at the end of second term so in the third term there's summer sports and usually one day tournaments and the like for all the sports you played in the first two terms. That's how it seems to me anyway, someone with more knowledge of sports clubs feel free to correct me.

6) There's 16 sharing rooms at Collingwood, they send out a form asking if you would mind sharing. If you put down that you don't mind sharing, you will definitely share. Otherwise there is a very slim chance but it's possible.

Hi, all going well I should be starting at Stephenson college (Queen's) in October. Does anyone know the exact dates for things like moving into accommodation/fresher's week/lectures etc? I basically jus need to know when I'm going to quit my jobs, lol.
