I've applied for a NatSci course, and right now I'm trying to decide what modules I want to do. I was just wondering if there will be something at the start of term like an overview of modules in each department? Or are we supposed to choose just using the info on the website? Because currently on the NatSci section two modules of Biology aren't working (can't see the content of them) and I can't find them in the Biology Department's own section.
*edit^ they are working now*

What are you considering?

I'm not considering pulling my Durham application but I posted the question in here as there are a large number of students who have gone through UCAS, so may know if you can. I didn't really want to start a thread on it, so I'm just asking around. It's my insurance I'm thinking of...if I don't get into Durham I don't really want to go to my insurance, so by pulling it I can go straight into clearing or a gap without having to take my place up there. Does anyone know if it is possible, or worth it?

I would wait and see. If you get into Durham you have nothing to worry about, if you don't, then you can ask your insurance to release you (whether this is to go into clearing or have a gap year)

I didnt like either of my choices of uni, so I decided not to take up my place at my first choice (UCAS send you a letter confirming it). I took a gap year, worked in places that strengthened my personal statement, and got into Durham.

Do second year students living out spend much time at their college?
Reply 2266
depends on the person. I've not spent much time there at all over the past year, but others have spent a lot more.

I think I went to college about three times last year.

Some questions about accomodation, particularly Stephenson college:

Is it sorted out after results day? I'm pretty sure I did an online app ages ago, but I haven't heard anything back.

Is there a deposit you have to pay? If so how much?

Around how much is it per month?

I had a look at the website, but it was pretty vague on the nitty gritty stuff.
hey, i was wondering, if/when a college is over subscribed, how do they choose who to keep and who to reject? is it just random?
thankyaazzz! x

it's more or less first come first served I think, with subject quotas.

but, if you get accepted by the department you'll be sent to a different college, so they'll find space for you somewhere.
Im moving up to Durham on thursday and living in a 2nd years house until term starts because i need a job and there are no jobs in Sheffield for some reason! Anyway, Ive been offered three jobs, one at Lloyds next to Loveshack, Bella Italia and Coffee Heaven.

2 questions...Im obviously going to work full time til term starts and then cut down to part time during 1st semester. Which is the best job to do? A restuarnat or a bar and how many hours do you realistically think I can cope with? (doing combined honours)

2. Is it ok to have a job?!

thanks!

Well, I'd pick Lloyds if it was me. It'd be more social working there too, might see people that you know while you're working and stuff. There's a Lloyds where I live, and I know some of the bar staff.
Lloyds for the reasons above, so long as you're not worried about the possibility of working lates with lectures to go to in the mornings. Otherwise I'd say go for one of the other two. You're so lucky to have been offered THREE jobs! I really wanna find some part-time work in Durham but will have to wait until I get there in October unfortunately :frown:

just do what Im doing and move up early! Yeh I was thnking Lloyds because its more sociable but you earn SO much more money working in a restaurant. Ive been working at Strada for quite a bit and I get more in tips every night than I did from my wages (and they werent bad either). Not sure how Id cope without tips everyday...

Youre right about getting up for lectures, though theyve only offered me weekend work so no lectures to go to really. Can imagine being really tired if I took that up coz studnets dont really go out at the weekends for obvious reasons so Id be going out all week and then effectivly at the weekends as well..

anyway, rambling! Ill have a think. Does anyone know if its ok to have a job in first term? Ive talked toa few people who thought there might be a problem with it including the manager...

Ah I wish I could! (nowhere to live!) Yeah a restaurant would definitely better tips-wise!

As far as I know it's fine to have a job.. I think. How would they know anyway?
I think they mean fine to have a job in a social and having enough time sense, which it is if you just make sure you don't work all the time. You really shouldn't do many hours, and you should try to not work at all for Fresher's Week. I'd hate to miss out on events because I'm working, and you'd end up with less friends.

Hi

I've got an unconditional offer for Durham (on my gap year so already have results) and have been placed in Trevelyan College. Didn't apply for that one and since talking to family friends who are at Durham they all keep telling me Trevelyan is really keen on music and drama which I am not a fan of...at all! Have just received my welcome pack from the college and just kind of backing up my thoughts that not particularly keen on the college.
So does anyone know whether I would be able to change colleges/how to go about it?

thanks

Should've looked into it all earlier really.. it's probably far too late to change now. There's a lot of Trevelyan people on here, they'll probably try to talk you around.. I have to say, it doesn't seem like a college I'd want to be at either, but I wasn't put there so I'm ok :p:
