Just a quick question about the sports form in the freshers pack.

If you dont send the form back, do you still get a sports card and the chance to play at college level? On the form, theres only space to opt out of the sports charge or the space to trial for university level sport, which i dont think im good enough for.

Back in 2007 you had to bring everything yourself unless you purchased the bedding pack.

You only send it back if you want to opt-out, everyone opts in by default. You can also opt out later on and get your money back. If you fancy playing at college level, you don't need to do anything.
This might be a silly question, but where and when do we get our timetables? It's just that I was thinking of doing a language and need to check for any clashes

Ah, thanks very much! I just realised that I haven't even decided my modules yet, but thank you anyway >_< I'm sure the site would really come in handy
Hello.
I'm looking at choosing a college but I've been told Hatfield has a reputation for rahs which worries me a bit..
I'm looking at Hatfield, St. John's or St. Chad's. Can someone tell me their honest opinion of each and anything that is particularly important to know about any of them? thank you

Most people are happy wherever they end up, and colleges are more alike than they are different.

St. Johns has a reputation for being very religious, and their Christian Union is quite active (the best evidence for this is the fact that their bar is always empty on CU night). Having said that, the only people I really know from Johns are militant atheists and they seem very happy. It seems like a friendly college too.

St. Chads is very small. I know that some people find it a bit too small in that it can be a bit cliquey and it's hard to avoid people, but obviously being small is advantageous in that you'll get to know everybody.

Hatfield does have a lot of rahs, but not everybody there is one. I know plenty of people who aren't rahs. It seems to have a pretty strong college spirit, so I wouldn't say that the rah factor is necessarily something that should totally put you off :p:.

thank you! I think I'm leaning towards St. John's now.
Ok i'm going to apply for maths in september so I would be grateful if someone could recommend me a college.
I basically want the nicest college (best accommodation, food and facilities etc), with the least rahs and one quite close to the maths institute :awesome:

"The nicest college" is kind of broad. I recommend reading over the college descriptions in the stickied FAQ and thinking about what appeals to you. Size? Aesthetics? Sport? Arts? Drink prices at the bar?

Grey is closest to the science site, although none of the colleges are much more than ten minutes away.

Most of the colleges have accommodation that varies from nice to pretty tatty, unless you opt for Butler which is all en suite and self-catered. No college is particularly far away from the maths department, but Hilde Bede is a little further out, but not far enough to mean that you should discount it. Hill colleges tend to have fewer rahs, but to be honest they're really not that big of a deal. They're a visible minority.

Aidan's has a reputation for really good food, but I've not heard particularly good things about any of the others. The only college where I've tried food is Mildert, and that was pretty grim.

uni provides nothing, but will sell it to you
This sounds like a bit of a stupid question, but how good do you have to be to play at university level (for any of the teams, not just the 1st team) in the major sports?

(Hockey/tennis/netball/etc...) - very good school level, or county level, or...?

Thanks!
What is the purple GS12 form that's meant to be in the welcome pack? I don't have a purple form, and neither does anybody else I've spoken to. It's mentioned in the health welcome letter, as having to be returned along with the questionnaire - Obviously I've got the questionnaire form, but what's this purple thing?

I rang up my college and asked about that and they said there has been an admin error and you'll get that on arrival so just send off your questionnaire.

Yeah, I got mine in my Mildert pack.
Do you think we should return it anyway, or wait until we get there?
