I've got 2 questions about Castle, which you must be sick to death with hearing about but here goes:

1) Upon arrival, are there large groups of people who already know eachother, or does the uni try and split up groups from the same sixth form? IF there are such groups, how large are they? and does it become difficult to be accepted by these groups?
I really want a fresh start, and the chance to make friends with new people.

2) In Castle accomodation, particularly Moatside, are there any baths, or is it all showers? And how many people to each?

Thank you!

Very few people know each other when they arrive - the only people in our year who knew each other even vaguely were people who had met on the post application open days! The chances of there being people from your sixth form there are very slim, and even if there are it would be really easy to avoid them!

With regards to bathrooms - there are a mixture of baths and showers, although I think it's mostly showers (my bathroom has a bath with a fixed shower over it, on the floor below it's just a shower). The number sharing varies, but I share with 5 others, one of my friends shares a bathroom, a shower room and a toilet with 9 other people. Sharing isn't an issue - I was apprehensive at first but I never have to wait, and people generally keep things in good, clean condition!

I love baths so much, didnt want them to be a luxury just for the holidays

And as for knowing people, i went to 6th form hoping for a 'fresh start' but when i got there everyone already knew one another, and I felt quite ostracized - just didnt want a repeat performance of this.

Brilliant! Thank you so much, I'm going to work my arse off this year, because I'm so excited for Durham
anyone give some advice here?
i sent my appLication in september - received the acknowLedgment a few days Later and since then i have heard nothing - it appears that i am stiLL in department and have not been sent to coLLege, whiLst other appLicants who appLied at same time for same course and coLLege ( history at van milder) have been rejected - moved to coLLege- and given offers... is it usuaL for them to take so Long with some appLications? does it mean they are not interested? am i just waiting for a rejection or have i been misfiLed?
sorry if i sounds worried but my other appLications have aLL aLready been processed and this one has not moved at aLL

just wait. Durham are notorious for being slow.
And do you have to use capital 'l's all the time?

I was about to give a ******** explanation that Portuguese keyboards only allow capital ls, but then I noticed that he had missed the one in 'mildert'.

Surely there are more exciting things in this world to worry about?

Not at all, I have my sources of entertainment. Being a grammar nazi is not one of them...

well your sources of entertainment are clearly pointing out things that I do.

Anyway, this has no relevance to the thread, so goodbye.
Actually I was just making the point that you are a bit of a miser. Just one those "at least my life is not that bad" moments.

Hey guys,
Ive applied to Durham and received my offer and been accepted into my college of choice (St. Cuth's) Ive been advised to wait for a bit before I reply to any of my offers although Durham is definitely going to be my firm. The only problem is I want an ensuite room and to be self-catered in Cuth's, so is that all sorted out as soon as ive replied or do I have to wait until mid 2010 to choose? Or can I not choose at all, will I just be randomly put somewhere?

Thanks
You have to wait until after results day to choose your room. You get a list of options (Bailey - fully catered, and then Parsons Field en-suite or not and meal package or fully self catered) and you have to give them your preference. Which room you actually get depends on luck and your circumstances (eg if you're older you're more likely to get an ensuite).

Ok then, thanks for clearing that up.

Very friendly, great college, it's amazing. Yeah, there are some internationals at Cuth's, I can't really say how many there are in comparison to other colleges. I love it anyway and I've never heard any complaints from other internationals.

Ive got a conditional offer at Cuths but I didnt know about the room sharing! Also, I wanted to stay on the bailey but where are the other parts of Cuths? I visited Durham but never saw the other part, not that I was looking for it or have known what it was had I seen it, but I dont remember seeing it after looking at pictures of Parsons Field.
It's about 10 to 15 minutes from the bailey part of Cuth's. You cross the river and walk past the DSU, past the court and then it's by the racing course.

I met someone living in the non-bailey accommodation and he loved it. Said it was quite good to be away from the main Bailey bit sometimes, as it's just the people who live there (and their guests), whereas in the Bailey site you've got all the porters, people on bar crawls, people going to meetings etc. It really depends on whether you want to live in 'halls' type accommodation (mainly ensuite, self- or part-catered, 38 week let), or in smaller groups in different buildings along the Bailey (shared bathrooms, catered, 29 week let). I've heard great things about all parts of Cuths though, so choose based on your catered/self-catered preference, not where you think has the best rooms! (Also be awared that most - if not all - of the freshers' Bailey rooms are shared. Very, very nice rooms, but still shared).

EDIT - Do be aware that Bailey rooms can be literally off the street (and since there are 4 or 5 colleges on that street, it gets very noisy when there are bar crawls going past! But if you don't mind a bit of noise then it'll be fine).
