you won't get to move to Castle, and John's isn't that religious, (well, it is, but there are plenty of non-religious people there too)
You'll probably fall in love with John's when you get there :yep:

How easy is it to move to a different course if the one you're doing isn't working for you? I have sent an email to the Combined Honours for Arts department, but they haven't replied...

Which course have you applied for, and what do you want to switch to (and do you have the grades/subjects for it)?

No I don't mean I actually want to switch. I'm enquiring about the flexibility to switch degree programme when you're there. I've applied for Combined Honours in Arts- English and History- but was wondering that if, for example, I decided after a year that I didn't want to do History (not that I have), how easy would it be to switch to straight honours English?

Ohh, right. Um well look at dur.ac.uk/faculty.handbook to see the prerequisites for the level 2 English modules. I'd imagine that if you did all 3 of the English modules available to combined students (intro to poetry, drama and the novel I think?) you'd have the prereqs. However, the English department seem to be quite closed to transfers in my experience. Even for joint honours degrees (& for combined too), they restrict the number of modules you can take: if you do Education & English, for example, you take 1 fewer module in English than all the other Education students do in their partner subjects over levels 2 and 3.

It'll be a question of if they have spaces and like you, really - if lots of people want to swap out of English you might have a chance, but since the Durham English course is so hard to get on to I think the English Dept. are quite protective!

I'm sure that you could find 2 or 3 modules outside of English that you'd want to do each year though! There are at least 11 modules that I really really want to do next year, and you can only do 6!
This is for anyone at Van Mildert really:

I have read the food isnt great which is something that really worries me. Whats it honestly like?

Personally I really love the Mildert food (breakfast is amazing!). I was expecting it to be marginally better than school dinners but it's far better than that. The staff are so accommodating if you have any special dietary requirements too.

Please bare in mind that food is such a subjective matter ("one man's meat is another man's poison") so you're bound to hear some bad comments.

Apparently, Mildert's food is some of the best in the University and we also have a Meals Committee so that you can provide feedback.

Hope this info helps.

Thanks,

James

Hi,

I'm one of the open day reps at Mildert and I think we're busy processing a lot of open day things at the moment. I'll try and find out if a confirmation email/letter will be sent (it's been a long time since I came for an open day so can't remember if I received confirmation) but don't worry.

I'll get back to you next week some time because the person we need to speak to isn't about at the weekend.

Cheers,

James

Just noticed you're an open day rep for VM, any idea what's planned?
I'm starting combined honours in arts in sept and read somewhere that the amount of English modules you are allowed to study over the whole duration of the course is 5. Is this true? Also, how does the English dept react to combined honours students wanting to do a masters in English?

I'm almost 100% sure that will be over levels 2 and three. You're definitely encouraged to take all 3 open english modules at level 1, and it would be pointless them saying that if you could only take 1 per year after that!

So you either do 2 level two English modules + 3 level three ones, or vice versa. Email them to ask about Masters'?

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say... you'll have to wait and see!

There's no need to fret! No letters/emails confirming that Mildert has received you're open day confirmation will be sent out as there isn't enough time.

Hope this info helps and that you're looking forward to the open days.

See you soon.

On the Faculty Handbook for Combined Honours in Arts it says:
"Students may take a maximum of 100 credits in English across Levels 2 and 3"

How many credits have to be taken each year, 100? If that is the case then English can form half of your degree right, so the degree would be named 'x and English'- rather than 'Combined Honours in Arts'?

No, its 120 a year...
hola
hoping to apply to durham next year, either Hatfield or Castle.
Just wondering, how many first years are in double rooms in both of these colleges. Ive heard varying numbers from Hatfield being practically all shared rooms to hardly any at all. And in regards to castle, how many actually live in the castle (one of the main reasons i love castle ) compared to the outbuildings which didnt really look as impressive..

It's 120, as HMK said....more importantly, the only named degrees in combined honours are ones with languages in. If you want a named degree ("English and x", you'll have to take an official joint honours English degree. ALL combined degrees (except where you've done a specific amount of language modules and things) will be called "BA Combined Honours in Arts, with honours in x, y and z."
