Accommodation is dealt with after results day, so don't worry about it yet.

i do a module of yschology, if i can help?

Just one module?
How do you like it, how is the teaching? I would have liked to hear from a Combined Honours student if they kind of feel disadvantaged because they only do Psychology as half of their degree. But you're probably not studying towards BPS accredition anyways, are you?

Wednesdays are normally better for visiting, some departments have interviews on non-open days but you get a tour.
Contacting the senior tutor is probably best, but yes everyone is in hibernation in Durham for the Easter holidays and will be back by the 26th April.

You could go for booking the train ticket and say your going to be there on that day, could you meet someone. I recommend going anyway, just to see the place (you will live there for 3+ years). Walk to the college, walk to the department(s) building, get an idea for where it is (find these on a map before leaving!). Go to the college reception and introduce your self as an applicant, or go to the college bar (opens after midday or a little later) and do the same. You might find someone that will show you around, they will be very welcoming and chat at least. I'm not sure about the department, but it wouldn't hurt to introduce yourself to the office and maybe get to see any important rooms/labs. The main thing is knowing where it is and what it looks like.

If you are really waiting for a reply then you could e-mail the JCR president of the college. They work full time for a year after graduating, one of their job roles is to show visitors around (when they aren't representing the existing students). What college have you applied for?

Thanks, but problem is already solved. Sort of. I'm visiting next week and get to stay at the college for two nights (I have to stay two nights, because I'm taking the train from Germany which pretty much takes all day, but was the cheapest way possible. And even the only one with the volcano on Iceland ). I hope I can still arrange to meet someone at the departments, because I'm really torn between Psychology and Geography at the moment :frown:

I didn't apply there, but I'm at Van Mildert college.
Sorry, I have far too many questions... is the Geography department number 40 on the map? I emailed them about visiting, but I didn't get a reply, do you think it would be ok just to stop by and ask when I'm in Durham?

Durham geography department is indeed number 40. What exactly do you want the department to do?

I arranged appointments with the other departments, too. I don't know what departments typically do on these appointments, but I thought they'd show students around and I thought I could ask questions about the course and how they can help me with my disability.

Ok, I'd try an email to [email protected] cced to [email protected] as those are the admin staff most likely to help you with something like that  a tour round the dept wouldn't take too long either, there's not that much to see!

Thanks, I tried those! I hope they reply by tomorrow. Are you studying Geography?

Hello all!

I have my heart set on Durham, and am considering Josephine Butler for my college. As such, I have a litany of questions that I hope some kind soul out there can help answer. Many many many thanks in advance :o:

1. I chose the butler college namely because i like having quiet time alone. I'm not socially awkward (at least, not to a large extent i hope!), but i would find it hard to be on a constant high. Is the environment quiet/ loud? And are the horror stories i've heard about butler being the choice for those wanting to bring their other halves back for the night true?

2. Are there any stereotypes for butler students?

And lastly,

3. With regards to monthly bills, what is the cost of the average monthly bill? eg water bills

Thanks again in advance!

you don't get bills when you're in college.

i was at butler and it was fine as far as noise goes, aside from my dickhead flatmate who liked to blast his speakers at all hours of the night, but you can get that wherever you live. if someone's being obnoxiously loud at 3am you can always call the porters on them anyway.

@the flatmate, hehe, hope the music was at least halfway decent.

Thank you! (:

Would you recommend staying at butler's though?

it wasn't. :colonhash:

butler's pretty good to live in though. the ensuites are awesome and since it's all so new everything is mostly pretty decent quality. if you're fine with being self-catered then go for it.

1. Noise was never much of a problem for me when I moved in, bar the racket my flatmates made at 3am . I never heard anything dodgy, and my neighbour had his girlfriend over a lot :p:

2. I have no idea... but I'm not very into college life so I'm probably not the best person to answer this.

3. When you live in college, you don't pay bills. When you live out, they'll vary according to how cold you can deal with your house being. We pay £15 each a quarter for our phone and internet (BT and O2), don't have a TV, and our gas and electric is probably less than £10 per month each on average (you'll get a nasty bill for the winter months and low ones otherwise), but it's not really possible to estimate accurately because my housemates are cheap and our heating's never been on for more than 5 hours per day.

Anyone know what grades Psychology Foundation students have been accepted on/its likelihood to be in clearing? It's still in extra at the mo.

Hey there,

Just wondering if anyone is doing an MSc from the business school at the moment?

I'm going to be doing the MSc in Economics and Finance and just generally wanted to know what the course was like.

Any info would be much appreciated

I remember a friend texted me at around 6am saying he'd got in, so I got up to check and found out then, along with all the other prospective Durham people I'd been talking to =). Then went into school a bit later to get my actual results.

Cool, thanks  My friend got told by her uni that they were updating at 3am or something like that, so I thought I'd ask
Hullo,
I was just wondering what sort of proportion of people given offers end up in their first choice college? I suppose that probably depends on the competitiveness of the college, in which case how competitive would you say St Cuthbert's Society was? [I tried googling, but couldn't find any decent statistics]
Also, for those at Cuth's, did you feel out of the way at all if you lived at Parsons field? Since I'd probably prefer to be self-catered (having to have three meals a day at college seems a bit restrictive), which leaves only St Cuth's and Josephine Butler, but the latter seemed to suffer from being out of the way a bit (feel free to correct me if you're a student there and think that's ********, though), so it looks as though Parsons field at Cuth's is the best option, provided it doesn't suffer from the same problem.

If you choose St. Cuthbert's, you will almost certainly end up there. Lots of people who don't get into their first choice college are sent here.

And I don't feel at all out of the way at Parson's Field; it's perfectly placed for both the science site and the centre of town. Most people appreciate that the atmosphere here is pretty great.

Hi! How is St. Marys? What do you think are the characteristics St Marys have? Anything that partiucularly distincts its from other colleges?
