Aula
Vodafone is good, I rarely have issues with them apart from in college bars where no one gets signal.

Thanks a lot. Does anyone know if virgin is any good?

Its as crap as T-mobile, being the same network. Avoid if possible.

Not sure, I will find out when I get back. Anything is better than T-mobile tbh, though that said they are merging with Orange soon...

Ive just done some research for you with the postcode of the university: DH1 3HP

Orange
Voice and text (2G): Excellent
Email and browsing (2G): Excellent
Browsing and HD voice (3G): Good
Hi-Speed browsing (3G+/HSPA): Good

O2

Dark blue: High coverage (Video calls/News)
Light blue: Standard coverage (Voice/SMS/MMS/ Music, O2 Active)
White: Variable (Voice calls, SMS (quality of service may vary))
Cream: No services available

Vodafone
3G & Mobile Broadband: Very good
Standard Services: Excellent

T-Mobile
Voice/Text/Pictures (2G): Very good
Video & Hi-Speed Internet (3G):Very good

3 Mobile (Notorious for poor coverage!)
You can use your mobile to make calls, send texts and use the internet in most instances. When you're indoors the signal strength may be better in different rooms.
thanks so much. when you say 3 is notorious for poor coverage is that becasue you know that's the case in durham? x

Strange question.. but I've bought a rug, and I'm not sure its going to fit. I'm in Moatside S block, do the beds lift up or are they stuck to the floor? If they lift up, my rug will fit

Do u or anyone else know whats the fastest way to get to Durham from abroad?

With my current airlines I can fly to either of Manchester, London and Birmingham...then which train should I go for?

Unless you can fly to Newcastle, which is easily the quickest way, I'd go for Birmingham or London as they're both fairly quick trains to Durham but London will be fairly expensive. Hope that's clear/helps

Which train would I have to take from those? Cuz frm Manchester Airport it takes abt 3h 10min. The fastest frm London would be frm King's Cross (3h 5min)...and it would take me some time to get frm the airport to King's Cross...so wouldn't Manchester be better and cheaper?

I could be horribly wrong, so correct me if thats the case :o:

I had no idea Manchester was that quick. In that case yes, go for Manchester as it seems simpler. Being a Londoner, I suppose I'm just used to taking the tube up to Kings X at then end of every holiday....

Anyone know the best site to buy cheap rail tickets? Ive looked at Virgin, it says it will cost about £45 (with railcard, which I dont have at the minute) return from Birmingham to Durham. The price isnt a huge issue but its over 3 hours each way which seems crazy because thats how long it takes in the car!
Ive never travelled to another city by train so im not really familiar with prices and duration but this seems quite long does it not?

As a general http://www.thetrainline.com/buytickets/? is the best one but tickets will tend to be expensive if you're only buying them a week or so in advance
Manchester; you can get a train from Manchester Airport to Piccadilly, and then a train from there...either direct or changing at (usually) York. Not sure what it's like getting from London airports to Kings X though...

hi everyone!

i was looking at modules and things and i can do 2 modules out of the 6 each year in a different department (doing ancient history btw :P)

i'm planning on doing 1 from archaeology and 1 from spanish, and i was wondering do i need to contact the relevant departments beforehand? or can i just turn up in the first week and ask to sign up?

thanks!

As long as you're doing valid modules (first year ones that you fulfil prequisite qualifications for, as I remember, though the website will have more details), I think you just sign up when you get here. You'll also need to choose modules that don't clash, which you can check at the clash checker linked to on http://www.dur.ac.uk/timetable/students/
