heya again  do people usually make a lot of friends and hang out at other colleges and stuff.. or do people mainly socialise only at their own college?

I expect there are some people that only make friends amongst their own college. Many people make friends all over the place. You can do whatever you want between those two boundaries, and you won't be the only one, whatever you choose  .

Do a search on the DSU website, and there's a long list of all the societies that you can take part in.

As Aule says, the DSU website has a large list of societies.

Colleges generally have a few societies, generally fairly small (colleges aren't themselves a large enough community to support most niche activities), and lots of sports teams (depending on college size).

DSU have many societies, which anyone can join, and the list of which you have already been directed to. There'll be a freshers' fair at the beginning of the year where they all compete for your attention.

There are also uni sports teams/clubs rather htan college ones, but I don't know much about them other than that there are plenty and they also have a fair thing.

Locked!? This isn't boarding school

Depending on how modern the college is, you get a keycode number or a magic swipey keyring to access the accommodation blocks. It's a room you're renting, you can come and go as you please.
Hey. Got into Durham last week for IR. Quick questions

1. Do most people rent gowns or just own one?

2. How often do you personally go to other colleges?

3. Whats the deal with going to other Colleges formals (and/or Balls)?

Thanks.

depends on the college. Everyone gets them for congregation (graduation), but whether you own or rent then is entirely up to you and probably depends on whether you're likely to ever wear it again.
Undergraduate gown'll depend on the college. If you're at a college that has them and you're likely to go to formals a lot then you definitely want to buy them, and I'm not even sure if you can rent them.

2. How often do you personally go to other colleges?

I go to other college bars quite a lot, but not formals

3. Whats the deal with going to other Colleges formals (and/or Balls)?

You need a friend at that college who will take you.

2) Not particularly often, but I used to do so more - visiting the bars mainly, but also friends at them. Lots of people go on bar crawls involving multiple colleges.

Hi! I received an offer from Hild-Bede for Law  A few questions..
(1) How far is Hild-Bede from the library?
(2) Will my tutors be solely from my college, or will there be different tutors from other colleges for the various modules?
(3) what facilities and functions does Hild-Bede offer?

Thanks a lot!

I'm not sure how far Hild Bede is from the science site, but I think it's about half an hour.
Durham colleges are completely separate from the academic side. It's not like Oxbridge. You will have lectures and seminars purely with the department.
And for 3 I'd suggest googling. Take a look at the Hild Bede JCR website (if they have one, I'm not certain they do), and if you do a search within this forum you'll find plenty of threads with info.

It's not half an hour! 15 mins is a rugby fast-walking guy, 20 max for everyone else.

(Also, the law library is at palace green til 2012).

There is a website but it's for our SRC as we don't have a JCR :P

The law library is at palace green, a 10 minute walk away.
Most law students don't use the library much though it seems, articles are all online and there's a core textbook for each module I think. (Seem to remember that from my law friends' bookshelves!)

All teaching is done by the dept so nothing is through your college. So lectures and tutorials are with people from every college, there isn't any differentiation. Not all tutors are even affiliated to a college, if they are it'll be just for pastoral things.

Facilities and functions - kitchens in every corridor, 3 music rooms (with pianos), big common room with mirrored walls, bar, theatre/hall, tennis courts, squash court, netball courts, boat house (for rowing).

And gardens for sunbathing in
Could someone please advise if access to streaming services such as iPlayer, 4OD etc is currently permitted?

Oh fine then, tell me almost everything I've said is wrong :hand:

No, fair enough. I realised I was thinking of Aidan's - Hild Bede, which is of course an extra 10 minute walk. Silly.

Thank you very much!(: In addition I'd like to know how the tutorial system works?
