Random question, but are you allowed fish tanks/aquariums in your room at Durham? Specifically at Castle college.

Pretty sure thats gonna be no, the tenancy agreement for colleges has a 'no pets' line in it and im sure that would include fish.
More questions about St. Aidan's.

1. Does it's gym include free weights?
2. Is it noisy at night?

Thanks!

1. I think it does. Somehow think I remember that from the tour.
2. Apparently on your accommodation form you fill in a bit about yourself and they put all the people likely to be out until the early hours every night in the same corridor. So I guess if you say you don't generally do that you'll be in a corridor with like-minded people so it'll be a bit quieter.

I hope this isn't too silly a question but I have the open day at University college on 21st and am stopping the night. So there is a meal and it guides formal wear (i.e dress/skirt and blouse for women). But I'm really worrying about what to wear- I don't want to be too formal or not formal enough? So any suggestions or what people usually wear to such formals.

Also (providing I meet my offer) I know its catered- but do many people have mini fridges in their rooms. What do you recommend to bring for rooms that you have found essential!

Thanks

Mini fridges aren't allowed unless you have a genuine reason such as a medical condition which means you need one in your room, there are communal areas with fridges to share if you want to store the odd pint of milk etc. The Castle is undergoing an extensive refurbishment at the moment so you shouldn't need to bring anything other than clothes, toiletries etc and if you want to; computer, tv, cd player etc

With regards to formal clothing, i'm assuming its just a normal meal and not an actual formal. Either way, if it states dress/skirt and blouse, then thats what you should wear.

In a word, no.

Not a chance at all, especially in Castle
Hey I have a few questions about Van Mildert, hopefully some of you will be able to help me out!

1. When they allocate rooms is it possible to get an ensuite as a first year? and do they send out a personality form like other colleges and use that to decide where people stay?
2. How far is it from the Law lectures/seminars?
3. If your in a society is that likely to go on till late and be in the centre of Durham leaving you to walk back alone in the dark? (Sounds silly but that would totally freak me out until I was comfortable with the area!)
4. How many people share a bathroom?
5. How hard is it to get into the college hockey team, musical, choir etc?

Thank you!

1) Pretty sure theres no Ensuites, and yes there will be a form
2) 10min Walk
3) depends if its a college or uni one, lots of societies meet on the hill however will meet in town. However the route up the the hill colleges is all on a main road, well lit and always has people on, even up till 3am ish. also Durham is very safe
4) no idea
5) most colleges have lots of teams (for instance Collingwood football has A->G) there will generally be a team for you ability and commitment level and if not you can start one!

1. Yes, but very unlikely unless you have a medical condition that means you need one. There's a personality form but since nobody shares a room, I'm not sure how much it's taken into account.
2. Don't know where Law lectures are held, but if they're at Elvet Riverside (where most non-science subjects are based) then it's 10-15 minutes' walk.
3. Some societies will, but the chances of you being on your own are remote unless it's a very obscure society :P Anyway, it's really well lit, I was initially worried about the same thing but I've walked back on my own a couple of times and it really doesn't feel dangerous at all.
4. On my floor there are 16 people between 4 showers and 4 toilets (well, three as one of them is out of order, but it's not causing a problem :P)
5. I haven't tried to get into the choir or any musical/theatre stuff, but I don't think choir auditions are too taxing. Obviously it's a bit harder to get a role in a musical, though :P It's also easy to get into college sports - there are different levels for most sports, and the ones that only have one team are willing to welcome anyone anyway.

Durham is really, really safe! Plus if you have a meeting, about half the 1st year undergrads live on the hill so it's 99% certain that someone else will be walking back with you! If you're out clubbing/on a bar crawl then it's pretty much 100% certain that you will find students to walk back with. If not, taxis are really really cheap or call the uni-run nightbus and it takes you home for £1.

Hey, I don't know if im in the right thread or not, but hopefully someone will be able to help.

I've just received an unconditional offer to study Geography with foundation. I do not know which college it is yet. I've already accepted the offer on UCAS, so i'm just wondering how it works. I heard that you go to QC for foundation then, if you pass the year, move to durham city campus for the actual degree.
I live in Newcastle, so it would be easy enough to go down to the university on the bus or train - i missed the open days.

Thanks

Yes that is the case, your foundation year will be at Queens Campus and I assume you will be assigned a college there (?) then when you start your degree proper it will move to Durham city.
Reply 3053
I have a few questions for people studying at the queens campus, if you could answer any it would be great!
1. What shops are there in Stockton?
2. Is the nightlife in Middlesborough good or just sorta average?
3. How often to colleges/ groups of friends organise trips to Newcastle?
4. Do you ever get bored at queens campus?
5. Do you regret your uni choice because it's at the queens campus?
Thanks!

Actually, you should be at Durham City - starting this academic year, the foundation programme is taught at both campuses - the norm is to study on the same site as the department to which you'll be progressing after the foundation year.

When I applied on UCAS it only gave me 3 options for colleges: john snow, stephenson or either. I've haven't been contacted by Durham yet about colleges, but i would much rather be in a durham campus college (one of the hill colleges) if poss. Should i wait for the letter, or contact them now?

umm that's because your course is at the queen's campus and not durham city! they are in separate places so you have to stay in the queen's campus and one of the two colleges there!

That suggests my previous post might be wrong, sorry - those options do seem to indicate that the programme is expected to take place at Queen's campus. I'm not quite sure why that should be the case since I would have expected Geography with foundation to be taught at Durham, along with a bunch of other foundation options which are definitely located in Durham. Call the foundation centre people for definitive advice - we're all just guessing here.
